When did you transition DC into a toddler bed?

DS is going to be 2 September 7. We are expecting #2 in December.

Right now he sleeps so well in his crib. I am wondering when those of you with toddlers transitioned your DC into a toddler bed. It seems it would make sense to get DS a toddler bed and give his crib to the new baby, but I am just so hesitant to make the change. Help!

We made the transition from crib to toddler bed at exactly 2 because DD was on the way.

It was a GREAT move! We were so scared because DS slept so well in his crib and we were scared we would never sleep again. We put a gate across the door so he will stay in there if he wakes up. He made the transition in a day and seems to like getting up into his little bed. If he wakes up he will play in the room. It went really well!

I bought another convertible crib - they will both have their sets for a very long time so I don't see it as money wasted. I plan on keeping Jack in the crib for at least another year (until he is 3)

Re: When did you transition DC into a toddler bed?

DD is 3 and shes still in a crib. Ive read so many posts on here about kiddies who were great sleepers in the crib and when they made the change to the bed they had sleep issues. I guess Im selfish and enjoy my sleep. DD sleeps 12 hrs AND naps 3 hrs at age 3 so Im not making the switch just yet,Chat Icon

But...if I had DC #2 on the way I would probably be thinking about it just as you are.

Amanda,
As you know, we borrowed a crib from a friend for the baby. Jeremy will be 3 in a month and we see no end in sight with the crib! In fact, we are currently looking at colleges that have cribs in the dorms Chat Icon

Right before my DD's 2nd birthday. We wanted to get the transition done with before #2 arrived. It worked nicely.

ETA: My DD was a monkey and climbing out of her crib at 18 months--a tent wasn't an option for us. We gated the doorway as well Chat Icon

Re: When did you transition DC into a toddler bed?

DD#1 was in a big girl bed at 13 months. She always hated the crib, and spent most of the time sleeping in our bed instead of the crib anyway. We had the crib for her that turned into a toddler bed and then a full size bed. Because she seemed so much more comfortable, we just turned it into a full sized bed, and she loved it and still does. Dd#2 was born when dd#1 was 19 months. We didn't transition her to a big girl bed because of the new baby, but it just worked out that way.

DD#2 is 21 months right now and we are getting to the point that she is going to be out of her crib soon too. She has the same one as older dd, but we might try the toddler bed first with her. Though she sleeps really well in her crib and I hate to lose that, she is starting to try to climb in and out of the crib NY herself. For now, she only yetes that when myself or dh are in the room, but I'm afraid she won't wait for us one of these times and just yet it on her own and get hurt.

But for us that means it could happen in 6 months b/c we are slowChat Icon

Does DC have a convertible crib? I'd just get another crib in that caseChat Icon

Re: When did you transition DC into a toddler bed?

My DS will be 2 in a month and DC#2 is due in January. I'm not 100% sure yet but, what I am planning on doing is letting DC #2 sleep in the bassinet for the first 3-4 mos and then the baby will get DS's crib and he will go in a toddler bed (like one of those little tikes cars or something) by that point he will be 2 yrs. 7 mo.

I'm just not comfortable making the transition now - 1. he is terrible with change and not the greatest sleeper and i need my sleep these days and when DC #2 is first born and 2. i really don't want to worry about him being free to roam around with a new baby inthe house - with my DS who figures out how to get through gates and manages to cause troule with nothing I just don't want to worry about this the first few months home.

That said, if DS starts trying to get out of the cirb (so far luckily he hasn't tried b/c i know if he does he will be out in 2 seconds) - i will switch to a bed sooner.

HTH!

Re: When did you transition DC into a toddler bed?

Like you we are expecting #2 a couple of months after DS turns two. DS turned two this past weekend and we are a repeat c/s on 9/30.

DS has had a full size bed in his room since birth. Last week I ordered bed rails for the full size bed. We put them up Wednesday night 7/29 and tried to put DS in the bed. He kept getting out of the bed so Wednesday and Thursday night he slept in his crib. On Friday 7/31 I went to Target and in the $1 section they had an Elmo birthday book. I got it for DS b/c he turned 2 on Saturday.

At the end of the book Elmo goes to sleep in a big boy bed. I read it to him for the first time Friday night and I pointed out to my son that its Elmo's birthday and Elmo sleeps in a big boy bed. I got the book initially to prep him for his party which was the next day. But the ending was an added bonus. That night (Friday) he went to sleep in his big boy bed for the first time. We are on night 4 of sleeping in the big boy bed. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: When did you transition DC into a toddler bed?

My oldest DD was 17 months old. We needed the crib for her baby sister. She did great with the transition.

My youngest was only 15 months old. She hated her crib so we had no choice. She did fantastic with the transition.

We have two convertibles, and planned on keeping DD in her crib until her room in the new addition was finished, but she started climbing out of her crib on her own (3 times that first night.... Chat Icon Chat Icon , so at around 10pm, I had to convert it to a toddler bed so she wouldn't get hurt.... She was about 2.5 at the time.

DS we converted also around 2.5. He wasn't climbing out, but we wanted him to get a "big boy bed" before his baby sister was born.

Re: When did you transition DC into a toddler bed?

We did it right before he was 2. It was a bad move--he didn't need it but we thoughthe was such a good sleeper he'd make the transition easily. DS used to got o bed first shot, sleep through the night unless he was sick, and wake at 7:30 8. It took about 6 weeks for him to not get up about 5-6 times a night. It's been 6 months and he still wakes up and pops out of bed 5:30-6am instead of rolling over and going back to sleep. It takes about 4 tries to get him in bed for the night. We rushed it and I wish we'd waited.

Re: When did you transition DC into a toddler bed?

well, if you consider you can put DC#2 in a bassinet for 3 months and use a PNP for at least a couple of months after that - DC#1 could be 2 1/2 before you absolutely need to transition.

Thats probably what I would do.

Just a thought.

DS was 3.

He probably could have stayed even longer but we wanted to start potty training. So we had to instill the whole "big boy" theme (i.e. big boy bed, big boy potty etc). It all went Very smooth.

We just transistioned DS about 2 weeks ago. He will be 3 in Oct. He was so excited and he LOVES his big boy bed. The only issue we have is he wakes up a little earlier now and comes into my bed to lay with me for a while - cant complain about thatChat Icon
