when did your child learn how to open the baby gate?
DS has this one on his bedroom door. He'll be 18 months in under a week. He was in bed with me but was misbehaving so I put him in his bed to go to sleep. I closed the gate after myself, I'm sure of this. He got up and cried at the gate for about 3 minutes. Then I heard it slam closed...i got up out of bed to see if dh was letting him out and in the dark i see him run past me in my bedroom.
how is this possible?????
even I have trouble with this gate sometimes. At what age would one consider it normal for a child to be able to open the gate?

We got the gate where you push on a pedal instead of the hand thing - my 5 year old nephew couldnt even push hard enough with his foot-

We have one that you need to push s button while pulling the handle up & my now 2.5 year old figured it out right after his 2nd birthday. The kicker, my 3 year old still can't figure it out & I struggle on days.

Our boys started climbing over the gates right before they were 18mo. We got a new one but H. does know how to open it. Boys are creative! Maybe try a lock at the top of the door?

These are the best. My older one (4) has lesrned to open it since she was about 3.5 bit it takes effort. She bounces on it for awhile, and you can hear it happening so it's not a shock. My almost 3 yo cannot open it.

I had one where you had to push a button then lift one piece and pull back all at the same time. So its either highly coordinated single handedly or easy for an adult on two. It had to be done in order or it wouldn’t open. She never figured it out. We took it down around 20m. We never used it on her door though. We used it only to give the cats some piece. We barricaded them in the small kitchen we had in our apt and fed them. She could see them and pet them if they let her from the other side of the bars.
She had free reign of our house (minus a few exceptions). If we didn’t want her in a room, we closed the door. She was not tall enough to figure out how to reach or turn a door knob, so it worked out fine. Her bathroom, her bedroom (to keep the cats out), our closet and the third bedroom are always closed. Our bedroom and bathroom are always open. When she was smaller, we’d open her door for her if she wanted to go in and play. Now she’s big enough she can open her own door and she knows she has to close it or the cats will get in. One of them has a bad habit of chewing on string or straps so she has to close her door to avoid her stuff getting chewed up.
