When did your DC start drinking from a straw?

We got DS a sippy cup with a straw but he doesn't seem to get it. I think the straw may be too thick and long? DS is 15m old.

Re: When did your DC start drinking from a straw?

Around 10/10.5 months

I kept giving it to her everyday (w/water) in addition to her bottle...after a few days she figured it out. Now she only uses straw sippys and no bottles.

Keep giving it to him, he'll figure it out!

DD also saw me drinking from a straw and tried to mimic me several times Chat Icon

Re: When did your DC start drinking from a straw?

my SIL showed me a way to teach Em and she has been able to do it since she was about 9 or so months old.

get a REGULAR straw (not a sippy straw) - one that you would use.

using water (or any beverage), get some of it to go into the straw (by dipping into the beverage, going to use water from now on).

using your finger tip, stop up the straw so that some of the water stays in the straw.

put it into DC's mouth and keep your finger on the other end. if DC doesn't 'suck' right away
...let a tiny bit of the water out of the straw by removing your finger tip and putting it back...(so DC can see that there is something IN the straw).

repeat until DC starts 'sucking' it out of the straw...

it took about 5-6 times of me doing this and Em got it down cold! if we're out in the spur of the moment doing something and she's thirsty - this has saved us quite a bit. we can just run into a store and grab a container of milk that she can drink from a straw with!

hth!

A juice box might help since you can squeeze it. Liam "sort of" could do it but, the juice box sealed the deal.

He still can't do some sippy cups. Some have a valve you have to bite. Honestly, I find it difficult to use. And he also tries to tip the sippy cups back and gets all confused.
