When do kids start interacting with one another? Trying to decide if and when to enroll DS in daycare.
We don't need to send DS to daycare but I thought it may be good for him for the socializing aspect of daycare.
I was originally planning to send DS to PT daycare when he was around 6-7 months old. Now I'm thinking maybe we should hold off until he is 1 year old.
I plan to send him to nursery school when he is 18 months old. Husband thinks we should just wait until he is 18 months old and skip daycare altogether.

Re: When do kids start interacting with one another? Trying to decide if and when to enroll DS in daycare.
I put DS in a mommy and me program 1 day a week when he was around 16 mo. old or so. I also started Little Gym with him around the same time. He is now 2 and I put him in a nursery program starting in Sept. for 2 days a week, about 1 1/2 hrs. At this age they still do parallel play. I was worried about DS being socialized as well b/c he is either with me, DH or my parents but honestly, just taking him to the park, playdates every so often is enough IMO until 18 mo-2 yrs. I would skip daycare.

DD is almost 8 months and will be starting daycare next week. We were there for almost an hour yesterday and she had a great time! I will let you know how it goes, but for me, I think it will be a good thing. I'm excited for her to have the time to interact with other babies her age, she loves being around other kids!

Re: When do kids start interacting with one another? Trying to decide if and when to enroll DS in daycare.
Abby started day care at three months. Once she was able to balance on her belly and sit upright without assistance, she became more socially active. Right now, she is one of the most social children I have ever seen and I 100% attribute it to being in day care. Being home for the summer, I made sure that I had her enrolled in 2 programs as well as playdates to make sure she maintains that level of socialization. She is afraid of nothing.

Re: When do kids start interacting with one another? Trying to decide if and when to enroll DS in daycare.
At 6-7 mo they are definitely not really interacting with each other - I mean they will reach for each other, touch each other - touch the same toys but, not really interact or play together.
I'm not really getting why you would send your baby to Daycare if you don't need to. If it is just for socialization why not just take classes with DS - you can do gymboree, music together, library classes, play groups, just going to the local playground etc - that will give DS PLENTY of socialization w/o the downsides of daycare - plus, he will be gaining that much more from being around you too!

I would love to take DS to all those mommy and me classes. Unfortunately most of those activities are at times when I am at work.
I guess I can take DS to Gymboree on the weekends.

Re: When do kids start interacting with one another? Trying to decide if and when to enroll DS in daycare.
I would save the money for DC and wait till 18 months. my DS is watched by his grandparents and is the most social baby. we were out of state surrounded by a TON of family he never met, and he had a ball !! he smiles at every person who looks at him LOL I am saving that extra $ his future, and he is not affected at all by not sending him to day care. he will be 11 months, don't feel bad about not sending your DC
ETS we didn't do any classes bc I am too tired to rush out of the house on the weekends to take him

I have to disagree with this. Even though they may not be actively "playing" together, they are most definitely interacting by way of observation. Kids at this age are CONSTANTLY watching one another to see what they are doing, and are starting to be able to imitate what they see. When we visited my DD's daycare the other day, I saw this firsthand. DD was fascinated by what the other babies were doing.

I just wanted to come back to the original post and say: If you do decide to put your DS in daycare for whatever reason, do not allow ANYONE to try and make you feel guilty about your decision. You would not believe the amount of grief that I've gotten from people about sending DD to daycare at 8 months. I am extremely confident in my decision--and whatever you decide, you should be too

I would like to follow the pattern above with my son...he's 16 months old. I skipped the day care because I really don't need it and I do play dates with my son and he is constantly around kids with family and friends.
I want to enroll my son is a nursery/school at 18 months as well....and currently looking for programs to enroll him now..
jellybean1420, can you tell me about the little gym? Are you in Nassau, if so, can you tell me about the nursery, please.

Frankie went to daycare at 6 months and imo, it was the perfect age for him. I feel like because of the daycare he has developed so many milestones, language skills and social skills. I love the daycare.

Re: When do kids start interacting with one another? Trying to decide if and when to enroll DS in daycare.
DD is 12 weeks old and has been in daycare since 7 weeks. I agree with the PP that while she isn't laughing and talking it up with the other kids they DEFINATELY watch and pickup things from each other even at this age. DD has the BEST social personality and we attribute it to our personalities and also to the interaction she gets with so many different people and kids at the center. There has never been a time when a stranger leaned into her stroller to talk to her where she cried or didn;t smile back. I don't think there is too young of an age to start social "networking" LOL in fact I may get her a facebook page LOL JK!

DD has been in daycare since she was 4 months old. At around the one year mark, she really started to become a social butterfly, and I could tell she enjoyed being with other kids. She is now 19 months old and LOVES other children.

I'm confused, do you NEED to put your kid in daycare or you just want to put DC in for interaction?

Re: When do kids start interacting with one another? Trying to decide if and when to enroll DS in daycare.
DS and his friends have just started interacting with each other more, I would say around 19 months.
He liked being around other kids before that though, and watching them while he was playing. But now they actually play with each other for very short spurts--nothing big, they might throw a ball stuff like that.
Mommy and Mes or Gymboree is good though if you want more socialization. Less expensive too.

I think you are misreading my post - I did say how they do interact in some respects and I do agree with with you but, I was talking about in the sense that they are playing together all day as in doing a puzzle together or playing ball or playing pretend. My point was just that the level of interaction atthis point can be gotten other places that don't last all day long. At that age they are learning just as much from their parents, enviornment and kids of all ages - IMO itis not ture interaction with peers of their own age that would make daycare any more beneficial in this respect - that is all i meant b/c that is what i thought she was asking.
