When do you feel kids should be...
able to identify all of the letters in the alphabet. Not just say the alphabet but identify the letters in isolation? Just wondering because a friend of mine was told by her pediatrician that her son who is almost 41/2 should know them by now and that she will be concerned if he doesn't know them soon. I feel like that is a bit drastic. I teach 1st grade & often I have a bunch of kids that have trouble with a few letters when they come to me in September. What do you think?

I think there's a difference between not knowing a couple of letters and not knowing your letters. I have to say, I agree with your friend's ped.

Re: When do you feel kids should be...
depends on how many he doesn't know. if it's up to 5 that's fine. any more than that by 4.5 and i'd be worried too.

i agree...
and if not by then at least by the middle of kindergarten. if it's any later than that, i would be concerned and start thinking about screening for a possible reading and/or visual issue.

You have to take into consideration what kind of schooling the child has had, and/or how much the parent has worked with the child. No one learns these things by osmosis! (well, some do, but that's not typical ).

ita - there were kids that came into k w/no knowledge and confused letters for #s - then with work, were reading and writing at the end of the year.

oh, absolutely, but i think most of took the post as an "average" parent that is spending time with her child, talking with the ped., etc. of course we don't know this for sure, but i think these parents are more typical than not.

Yes, she's been doing flash cards with him and he knows some, but not all. He goes to a 3 day preschool class but is starting 5 days a week in Sept. He's going to Kindergarten next year.

I think by the middle of kindergarten the children should be able to identify all the letters. It depends on maturity too and when they are developmentally ready. I would not be concerned at all.

Re: When do you feel kids should be...
I've taught preschool, kindergarten and first grade. Most kids seem to learn the upper case letters first and then the lower case one. I usually work on the letters in a child's name first, and then move on to the others. I'd be curious to know which letters he's missing or if he doesn't know any. Some mistakes are pretty typical (mixing up b, d, p, q, etc.) for this age.
The important thing is to know what a letter is. There have been times when I've pulled out the letter chart and had a child give me the names of colors or cartoon characters rather than the name of the correct letter or even an incorrect one.
Mostly, I'd just keep an eye on it at this point and keep track of the letters he knows and those he seems to be having trouble with. When school starts, your friend can talk to the teacher about it.
One big warning sign for me is when a child doesn't know the first letter of his/her name.
