When do you have to start "eating for two"?

I know that pregnant women should eat 300 more calories a day. When should you start this-- the second trimester?

I am not a huge eater, but of course want to make sure I am getting enough. Is it ok to just eat when I am hungry, or do I need to really force myself to eat more?

i only eat when i am hungry - in the first tri i barely had an appetite at all, and i only gained 8 lbs. don't worry, the weight will go on whether you like it or not Chat Icon my guess is (from my own experience so far) that we are taking in more calories than we are aware of, and it's enough for baby.

OK-- that makes me feel better. I am very aware of everything I eat-- from a caloric and nutrional value standpoint so when I need to start adding in 300 more calories, I will be very conscious of it.

My dr said that there is no such thing as "eating for 2". He said that you just eat in moderation and when you are hungry. Even snacking on things during the day is fine. I can still have things like tuna, feta (pasturized), and caffine but I do everything in moderation and don't over-do it.

NEVER! I was always told to eat when hungry. That eating for 2 business is just garbage and an excuse for those who cannot control their eating IMO! lol

I agree about only eating when you are hungry Chat Icon I never used to snack all day long so I know I'm definitely getting more calories

Well for me, I never had to force myself. I was extra hungry right from the start. I ate whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted. I eat pretty healthy though, just included a lot more ice cream. AND, I didn't gain weight until 16 weeks. So do what your body tells you to do.

Ditto for me only I started gaining around week 11 or 12. I was waaaaaaay hungry from the start so I ate when I needed to. There is no defintive answer really, everyone is different.

As others have said, there is no such thing as "eating for 2"!! You need to add just 300 extra calories to your diet...

This is what my dr said too.
Eat when hungry and don't over do it...yes you have to gain weight, but you don't want to put on any unnecessary weight.

Believe me-- I do not plan on using pregnancy as license to eat whatever the hell I want. 300 calories is nothing-- it's a big snack.

I just want to know when I should adjust my diet.

Re: When do you have to start "eating for two"?

I found myself overall eating exactly as I did pre-pregnancy.... only starting at about week 21 did I notice a desire to have an added snack (a chocolate milk) every day

I lost 5 lbs the first tri, and re-gained 6 as of 20 weeks.... so I'm up 1 lb.... (exactly what Crouton should weigh right now)

My best advice (in addition to what others said) is to eat what ever (as long as it's not a no-no according to your Dr.) and whenever you want... just avoid snacking on empty calories (soda, ice tea, cookies)

I just went with what my body told me. Whenever I was hungry or am hungry I eat. Now I usually eat every 2-3 hours but small meals, I tend to get full right away.
