When does the spitting up stop??

DS is only 5 months old, so I may be premature here, but I'm really getting tired of everything being covered in spit up!

He started out on Similac and around 3 months old we moved to Similac Sensitive. At first we saw some relief, but it only lasted a short time before I started anticipating every feeding again, wondering if we would all end up needing a change of clothes. (Just want to add, he's eating cereal now w/ breakfast & dinner, not sure if this affects anything.)

About a week to 10 days ago, we added Zantac to his rotation, after we took him to the ENT and he said that he was showing some signs of reflux, but again, not seeing any relief on the spitting up.

We're reluctant to change formulas again, but I feel like there's got to be something better than the constant spit up. When does the spit up slow down??

Re: When does the spitting up stop??

My DD spit up every day, multiple times a day from about 2 weeks old to 6-6 1/2 months. Then, she just "stopped". It was a happy, happy day.

When does the spitting up stop??

My pediatrician said it should get better as the baby gets older and should be gone by 12 months. I know this is not what you want to hear. My DD spits up a lot too and at almost 7 weeks I am excited if she wears the same outfit the entire day. Hang in there.

Yes my DS had it pretty bad and it went on until about 11 months (although decreased a lot).

DS is 7 months and it has definitely gotten better. I used to have to change his clothes at least 4x a day. After we started oatmeal and then fruits and veggies I noticed it started getting better. He rarely does it now.

Re: When does the spitting up stop??

Some of my friends are like, "wow, you go through a ton of bibs with him!" and all I can say is "yeah, it's much better than going through tons of outfits!"

and even then we still go through a couple of clothing changes. i'm always surprised when I pick him up from daycare if he's in the same outfit lol.

here's to hoping it starts to slow down soon!

We switched DS's formula to gentlease at about 6 weeks, but it was for gas and tummy discomfort. Not for spitting up. Your DS is a happy spitter and that is totally normal, I don't think a different formula would help except AR.

DS stopped spitting up around 6-7 months. I know it is sooooo annoying. I was always getting it on me, changing is and my clothes, a burp cloth was next to me at ALL times! But it will just stop one day, I promise! I remember getting to this point to when you just can't take it anymore.

Re: When does the spitting up stop??

DD had reflux so not until almost a year.
However, the ped did tell me that once they are sitting up and standing etc their core strengthens and it does help with the normal every day type of spitting up.

DS was spitting up a lot around 4-5 months, I think that's when it hit a peak. Started to decline by 6-7 months & now at almost 9 months he rarely spits up anymore.

Re: When does the spitting up stop??

I'll let you know. 6.5 months here and it's awful. After outfit #3 each day I usually just end up giving up and leaving him in his diaper.

So many of my clothes are ruined. It's frustrating, I get it.

DD2 was a huge spitter upper. All the time, every bottle lots of the bottle. On meds, added rice formula. The playtex drop ins helped a lot.

it finally slowed down around 9/10 months. but at 13 months, off of formula she still spits up every now and again.

Re: When does the spitting up stop??

I was just thinking this also. I don't Remer my dd#1 shooting up as much as #2. She seems to be in pain more and I may need to see if she had something going on. She crunches up and cries but when I spoke to the ped she didn't seem to concerned. Is this a sign of belly issues?

My son constantly spit up. He was put on zantac at around 2 months. He was also very gassy so we first tried the sensitive formula. That made his spitting up WORSE bc the sensitive formula is thinner than regular. Once we figured that out, we put him on AR and the spitting up got 50% better. Once you start feeding more and more food the spitting up should get less as well. GOOD LUCK

Re: When does the spitting up stop??

My older son was the spit up king. It never bothered him (no pain) he was always smiling. He was never on medication for it. His spit up didnt stop until he was sitting up for the majority of his day. I would say 7-8 months old.

I think DS stopped spitting up around 8 or 9 months. You just kind of get used to it...and then it stops!

I wish I could say I'm getting used to it but it's morning as it soaked my shirt and the couch... and again as I was putting him in his car seat later in the morning, it felt like the first time all over again lol.

at the very least I'm glad to hear that it will stop some day. hopefully sooner than later Chat Icon

DD is 6 months and still spitting up. It's so frustrating when I get us both dressed and then she pukes!! She's also on Zantac and the ped said it will not stop the spitting up. It just stops the discomfort that comes with spitting up. The ped also mentioned that the cereal might help, but she still always spit up after bottles! I'm hoping it stops at some point too!!

Seriously though I spit up a lot as a baby and I threw up a lot as a kid and I still, for an adult, have the kind of stomach that tosses things it doesn't like pretty quickly!! HAHA!

DS is seven months and will still spit up from time to time -- he's just like I was when I was a baby lol. My parents can't get over how much we are alike in that way. I need to make sure I burp Julian as much as possible. If I don't get at least one good burp - sometimes two - then we'll have a spitty-uppy incident lol.

The Similac Sensitive helped so much!! And the probiotic too -- Ped recommended Culterelle in the powder packs -- we put one pack in one bottle, once a day. That is it - just stir it in. It is wonderful. And helps boost his immunity naturally too which is great.

Yup, sounds right. DS spit up a lot ,too. I promise you it will end. I'm pretty sure spitting up tends to peak around 4 months, though we didn't see relief until a few months later.

Also wanted to add that I saw you have him on Zantac. DS was on it, too. Zantac is for reflux, and has nothing to do with spitting up. You won't see a decrease in spitting up because of any meds. It's just because their digestive systems are still immature. Babies grow out of spitting up as their esophagus muscles get stronger.

My daughter has reflux too and spits up 24/7, and people wonder why I don't get dressed!?! She's 6m and were both covered all the time it's mortifying, I can't wait to wear my nice leather flats and cuter outfits but until then I've learned the hard way, puke ruins leather.
