When negotiating for a new car at the dealer, what is considered a good deal?
We would like to buy a new compact SUV. So let's say the sticker price is $22,000. If we negotiated well, what would be considered a good deal if we paid cash?

we are in the process of buying a new car right now and let me tell you...these dealers are ridiculous...even with the ad from the paper for a car that is listed at $399 per month turns into a $509 a month deal...we went to 3 dealerships....

Yes, I know about the dealers. I am NOT looking forward to this process at all. DH was hit at a red light and the car was totaled.

if you are buying, not leasing, you should not look at the sticker price but instead ask to see the INVOICE price of the vehicle. the invoice outlines what it cost the car maker (say, Honda or Toyota) to make that particular car. you should not be paying much more than that price -- maybe five hundred dollars - eight hundred at the most. any more than that and they are ripping you off. you tell them you know that you are only supposed to pay about five hundred dollars over the invoice price, over what it cost the company to make the car - if they want to sell a car they'll do that, if not - you'll go to another location.
they get annoyed but tough shiiit - for every person that does this and gets a good deal, there are about 100 that get taken for a ride so don't feel bad!

the deals you see in the paper, commerical are typically the absoulate best credit saying you will get x percent...and that price is based off a certain model car.

go on edmunds.com and see what others have been paying for the same car/options. That will give you invoice price and where you want to be.
Also once you know the exact car you want, call around/email to a few dealers, and have them quote their best prices. I got the best deal via email, and didn't deal with anyone who wouldn't quote without me coming in (I've learned the hard way, thats a BS tactic).
