When taking a road trip with a 9 month old...

We're taking our first road trip as a family in a few weeks. For all those experienced traveling mommies, please share the items that you could not leave home without when taking a road trip with an older infant.

Hopefully this thread will help all family-vacationing first timers Chat Icon

We are driving from FL to NY on friday Chat Icon and I need some ideas too. We are bringing a portable DVD player in case she gets too antsy. But I plan on bringing CD's of her songs, books, some toys, snacks and as a last resort we'll use the DVD player.

Pack and play; a few new toys; dvd of their favorite shows; snacks, if they have a blanket or teddy for bedtime, and then all the usual food, formula, diapers, extra sheets, etc.

Re: When taking a road trip with a 9 month old...

We drove with DS from NJ to NC when he was about 9 months old.

The first thing I suggest is to drive through the night if at all possible. We left around DS bedtime and he slept for most of the trip. DH and I took turns driving and taking naps. It was wonderful to not have to worry about DS because he was sleeping.

Besides the obvious diapers, food, wipes, clothes...

We brought the Pack N Play and his walker. The walker was a God send. We were also in a rented house so there was lots of room for him to walk around in it. That's pretty much it. Toys, books... not much more to bring.

We drove to NC when DS was about 7 months. My DS doesn't really like the car, but did OK. THe DVD and Baby Einstein videos really helped. We stopped often so he could get out and move around.

On the way there, we tried driving through the night. It did not work out as we intended because DS didn't sleep great at all. Then, he was up the next day and I was ready for a nap since I got almost no sleep the night before. We drove during the day for the ride home and he was much better.

We drove to DW in March. DS was 4 months old but not a napper. We left at 5am. He did great. He slept for 2 hours at a time. We stopped when he woke up so he could get out of his car seat for a bit. He did pretty good. We took our time going down. (2 overnights, instead of 1) I thought with all the sleeping in the car, he would be messed up at night, but he STTN both overnights. Just bring a lot of toys and if it is possible, have someone in the back with the baby...
Definitely bring comfort items from home. We bought his PNP and bouncy seat. And some of his toys.
