When to be concerned about NO talking...
DS will be 15 months on the 24th, he says Mama and dada. Thats it. I know all kids are different. But when would one be a bit concerned? He did EVERYTHING else early, 4months rolled, 5-6 months crawling 8.5-9 months walking. Just wondering.

Re: When to be concerned about NO talking...
I think the range for talking is very wide.
For us, DS had a major word explosion between 17 and 18 months. That's when it was like all of a sudden a light bulb went off.
But I know someone who's DS wasn't really talking until well past 2 and he is now 4 and talks great.
I would not worry at this point.

I wouldnt start to worry unless they growl and cluck...
I honestly think that Jaz is just too busy exploring to worry about learning language. He's a bright little dude...

Re: When to be concerned about NO talking...
Jenn, I could have wrote this myself.
Liam and Jazz are the same. So advanced physically, but not verbally. At least Jazz says "mama". No "mama" from Liam yet.
He will repeat stuff, but doesn't say it on his own all the time.
I hope soon because my goodness, he babbles ALL DAY LONG!

Re: When to be concerned about NO talking...
At 15 months, I wouldn't be concerned at all. I know that my ped didn't even mention it until he was 18 months. And even at 18 months she left it up to me to call EI. She feels (as do I) that there is a lot of pressure to have x amount of words by x date. But that's a whole other discussion. She having 3 of 4 kids who went through the EI system.
Honestly, I think you know in your gut if something is amiss. Is he communicating w/ you in other ways? Pointing, grunting, babbling etc.? I think those are more important now.
Sorry if I rambled on . . .

Re: When to be concerned about NO talking...
We were referred at 15 months, but DS wasn't saying any words at all and we were also having feeding issues. My ped also said she errs on the side of referring early.
I think if you are concerned at 18 months, I would call then.

Re: When to be concerned about NO talking...
DS is just about 16 months. At 15 months, he said mama, dada, uh oh, doggie and no, which really sounded like nuh nuh. My pediatrician said he was right on track. He said he usually likes to see at least 5 words by 18 months and the word explosion should happen sometime between 18 and 24 months.
Even within the last few weeks, I've noticed DS becoming more verbal. He says muh for more. When he sees a ball or balloon, he says buh. When prompted, he'll say hi and now he tries to mimic me more. He also shakes his head yes and no now. It's definitely hard not to worry, but I'd keep talking to him and repeat words a lot.

Re: When to be concerned about NO talking...
I wouldn't be worried at all..my ped at DD's 15 month appt basically asked me if she was saying mama and dadda and that's it, thats all he wanted to know..DD is ULTRA verbal but not walking yet at 15 mos...I think they really concentrate on one thing and may excel at one, and are on target on others etc...I really wouldn't worry...

Re: When to be concerned about NO talking...
my boy is quirky as all hell.
at 2, had 7 everyday words.
called ei. he did not quailfy. called again, they forced it through.
they did not get him speaking at all. i am grateful they came, i learned a ton about the right way to play with him and all that.
one day he just started talking, to me, and never stopped.
did not talk to ei at all. had to video tape him talking to show therapist. she was in shock. had no idea, thought i was pulling her leg the whole time.
even now, if he doesn't like you, won't say a word-FOR HOURS! if he likes you, follows you around and won't stop talking.
he was really early for all other milestones. at the playground, 10 months old, this kid was amazing. talking though...much later.

Re: When to be concerned about NO talking...
at 18months they expected AJ to speak 15 words. Not that they had to be clearly recongizable but that they were consitent and identify something.
She knew about 8.
I was/am being told that I need to introduce a new word weekly and repeat it to DEATH! Its aggreviating work and frustrating. As a result (or I believe it is) she's stopped ALL talking. *sigh*
So I stopped. She's starting to talk a lil again. She's still very much behind. So next month I'm taking her back (21m) and they'll most likely request her to be in Speech Therapy.
Odd and annoying part is that is she is SOOOOOOOOOOOO active. She communicates so well without words. She knows her objects and learns so quickly. Its like she doesnt talk cause she doesnt NEED to. She babbles like a mad woman tho. She has 'conversations' over just about anything. Eating a goldfish.. well lets talk about it. Driving home or to daycare lets talk about the scenary. Look a bus, lets talk about it. She's such a babbler I have no DOUBT that she'll talk just fine when she WANTS to.
But they put so much pressure on us to make our kids 'right'. *sigh*

Frankie will be 14 months tomorrow and we have the same situation! He had started to talk around 12 months and then stopped using those words and hasn't added any new ones!! As of right now he says "hot" when he gets in the tub and "Hi" when he picks up his play phone and thats it!! I'm def starting to worry!

Re: When to be concerned about NO talking...
I know my Ped says they should have 15 words by 18 months. Remember you have to look at their expressive as well as receptive language. Many children do not have 15 words at 18 months, but they point and understand commands so they are fine. Your DC is still young. I wouldn't worry about it. If after 18 months you still have concerns then call EI.

Re: When to be concerned about NO talking...
My niece doesn't even say that and she is 18 months. They told her at her last visit that if she isn't talking at her 18 month appt. they will address it then. She goes next week.

Re: When to be concerned about NO talking...
M&J are 15.5 months and they say cat, dog (which sound the same anyway) and ball consistently. They know the signs for bubbles and more. They understand when I ask them for things or to do things, so I am not concerned at all.

Re: When to be concerned about NO talking...
Cailen was very similar - his language really exploded close to his 2nd bday - I wouldn't be concerned unless he wasn't communicating at all with you (pointing, gesturing, etc)
