When to drop a third bottle of milk

DS is drinking 18 oz of milk a day plus additional dairy here and there. At his ped appt yesterday I was told that he should now be drinking 14-16 oz. Right now he drinks 3 bottles 6oz each. I was thinking of giving him 2 bottles of 7oz or 8oz each. Even though I know he won’t drink the whole bottle on some days. When your DC was on 3 bottles, which bottle did you drop and what did you give DC to replace that bottle? DS will ask for an additional bottle sometimes during the day but I don’t give him more than he should get. I just ask him if he wants water and he will take that just fine.

Re: When to drop a third bottle of milk

i didnt know we were supposed to drop. DS is 20 months and still gets 3 bottles with about 6oz each.

ETA he gets his cup first thing in the morning (he asks for it...god help us if he doesnt get it). then another around 11am and another around 3pm. I stopped the bedtime milk around 11 months.

We dropped the morning bottle first (she never finished it and would rather eat her breakfast so that was easy) but still haven't dropped the early afternoon and bedtime bottle. Chat Icon

Re: When to drop a third bottle of milk

I dropped the bedtime bottle DD gets one 8oz first thing in the morning and one in the late afternoon. I try not to give her anything to drink an hour or so before bed because she soaks her dapers and I have even tried going up a size, it doesnt make a difference so thats why we got rid of the bedtime bottle. She did fine with this

Re: When to drop a third bottle of milk

DS was on 3 bottles until 19 months. He'd have a full 8.5 oz bottle 1st thing in the AM and again right before bed. I'd also give him a bottle before his nap (11ish) bc it was too early for lunch. I dropped the pre-nap bottle. I started by reducing the amount in the bottle but only did this a few times. It turns out he didn't care if I gave him a bottle before his nap or not. I started giving him a small snack instead before his nap. I was just alwasy worried he'd wake up bc he was hungry but that wasn't the case.

I was a huge milk drinker growing up and think drinking enough milk is important so my DS now still gets 17 oz plus whatever is in his oatmeal, cheese, yogurt, etc. Ped still thinks it's too much but whatever. Problem is DS still asks for more when his bottle finishes both in the AM and PM, i feel so bad! (Dr. Brown's only hold 8.5 oz)

Mady gets only 2 cups now. We dropped the morning one . She eats her regular breakfast and if she asks for something to drink. I give her some water or OJ.

Re: When to drop a third bottle of milk

That middle of the day bottle I think he can do without. I could replace it with a snack. At daycare sometimes he doesn’t even get that bottle since he gets 2 snacks there. At my parents he is constantly eating and my dad makes him fruit shakes with milk all the time so he gets his milk intake from that. At home I just tend to give him the bottle because I don’t have a snack prepared for him and it’s easier to just give the bottle. I’ve noticed he doesn’t ‘need’ the bottle to nap anymore. It’s more of a meal filler, kwim?

Re: When to drop a third bottle of milk

We just had DS's 18 month appt and they didn't tell us to drop any of the cups of milk, we said he gets 20 oz a day. I don't think he would be able to drop any of them, he loves his milk. We only give him milk and water, so it's not like I would replace with juice or anything.

It’s so weird how each Ped is different with everything... DH thinks we should just leave it as is for now. With DS#2 coming soon DS1 might want that bottle so we are going to hold off until a few weeks after DS2 arrives. Like someone said having the milk won’t hurt him.

It’s funny how at first I was such an advocate of getting rid of bottles by 12 months before I had DS1. Now I question how long I want to keep him on bottles. I still see him as my little baby when I see him drink from them and don’t want this stage to end.
