When to get an estimate for the basement? Was your basement empty?

We want to finish the basement and we want to get an idea of what it will cost.

We have a lot of boxes down there right now. We'd have to move them before construction began.

Is it ok to have contractors come for estimates before we move anything? I'm afraid taht we'll go through the trouble of moving them and the contractor will want them moved to a specific corner or tell us to leave them etc....

They can give you an estimate while you have boxes in the basement. They'll move them aside if they need to see anything specific.
