When to Put In Request for Breast Pump through Insurance?

Hi,

I was able to get my Dr to write a script for a breast pump which may or may not work as I am required to prove medical necessity. After speaking to several reps at the insurance company, one said that a script alone is evidence of "medical necessity." I'm not sure, but want to try it out. I'm only 4 1/2 months pregnant. Is it too early to put the script in and make the request? If so, when should I make my request? Thanks.

I'm pretty sure it depends on your insurance. My insurance company wont take the request until after the baby is born.

My insurance required the baby's date of birth to process.

I called a few days after I got home.

Medical necessity for my ins was twins or having baby in the nicu. Obv you can only predict one of those.

Thanks ladies. I will call the carrier. I just keep getting conflicting information. One rep says a prescription is enough..the other..a letter is needed from your Dr showing medical necessity. I guess it makes sense that they would not cover it until the baby is born. Thanks again.

I have Cigna and was told this. I am having twins but not due until August and I believe they said once they're born I can send it in. Others I've seen have said no sooner than a month before due date
