Re: When to start coloring hair to cover the grays?
ok, why can't i pull them out? that is what I do!
I was brunette for a while before I was preggo, then started seeing grays (really white, actually) halfway through pregnancy. After DS was born I got highlights and have kept them up and it hides them. But ladies, why can't I pluck them??

Found this while googling... not sure how true it is, but it could be a possible answer to your question
DON'T PLUCK: If you pull a gray hair, it will grow back gray, and runs the risk of disrupting the hair cycle and losing that strand of hair for good.

Re: When to start coloring hair to cover the grays?
I started going gray when I was about 24. I never coloured my hair until last week when I noticed how it was aging me (I'm 37 now). I used Clairol Nice and Easy-which is semi-permanent and washes out. I picked the same shade as my hair (which is almost black) and it worked well. I'm too lazy to maintain professional colour! For $7.00, it did the trick!

I pull mine out. I don't want to start dying my hair until I have to.

Re: When to start coloring hair to cover the grays?
The process of getting grays went very slowly for me. I had my first 2 grays during law school, so I was about 23. By 30 I think I had 4 or 5 and I knew exactly where each one was. I started to color my hair when I wanted to change the color and I just continued. Now I am 43 and I have grays throughout but I'm still mostly not gray, by far. I recently went back to dying my hair a color that is much closer to my natural color. Now I go longer between colorings so I see the grays more but I still have few enough to get away with less frequent coloring. Personally, I would have colored my hair to cover the gray as soon as I had more than a few grays. The worst part is that I hate the texture of my grays and nothing really changes that.

Re: When to start coloring hair to cover the grays?
I am a hairdresser. If you have wirey grays, coloring sometimes helps them lay down. You can start with a semi permanant hair color and it will fade out as opposed to a straight line of roots. BTW: I will be 39 tomorrow and I have NO grey What? The OLD chick on here can't rub it in

Re: When to start coloring hair to cover the grays?
It's only just the first few but I still couldn't stand it so I started doing what one place called a rinse and the hair school calls a PM shine. It's not permanent. It's a glaze that's the same shade or darker than mine and it washes out. But it does the trick to cover the grays and it doesn't harm my hair. It makes it even shinier! It's awesome!

Re: When to start coloring hair to cover the grays?
I feel your pain. I started getting grays in my 20's. I use semipermanent hair color, and try to only put it on the actual gray hairs. It works for me. If you you don't want your hair to get darker, use a shade lighter than your natural color. They grays will just be a drop lighter and look like natural highlights. If you use your regular shade, you can end up with darker hair (I have dark, dark brown almost black hair, an looked like a goth chick when I used dark brown, so I use medium brown now). If its just a few, I highly recommend using natural instincts on your own, and get DH to help you with the back. No need to spend big bucks yet. Now that I'm much more gray, I sometimes treat myself and get it professionally done, but still use nat instincts myself in between.

Re: When to start coloring hair to cover the grays?
I got grays really young around 23. I joke that my husband gave them to me because I was soooo stressed for all the time he was overseas. They have only gotten worse - i have dark hair so I need to do it about every 6 weeks

Re: When to start coloring hair to cover the grays?
I started two years ago, b/c I have a patch of gray hair and it bothers me. I'm 30. I beat the odds though - my parents started graying in their mid-twenties!!

Re: When to start coloring hair to cover the grays?
I pull mine out ---- been doing so for at least two years. I am 35 now and don't plan on coloring for a while -- no one would ever know I have grays -- I pluck once a week.
