When you cut down a tree...

...do you plant another in its place??

I know a lot of people are taking down trees to put up fences and all, but....we really need trees on LI!! The birds need them, the air needs them, WE need them....just asking...

Re: When you cut down a tree...

We took down 3 trees that were on our front lawn...we did not replace them but when we took down the 4 sick trees in our backyard, we replaced them with 3 healthy ones

Re: When you cut down a tree...

I cut 5 trees.

I will be replacing some of them but in better places in my yard. I will incorporate them in my new landscape.

Re: When you cut down a tree...

We are planning to plant a flowering tree in our front yard (perhaps a Dogwood) and we aren't cutting any trees down, so that is +1 in our yard Chat Icon

This weekend I am getting a bird feeder and perhaps a hummingbird feeder (although I have only ever seen one of these little guys) this weekend, so hopefully we will get more birds (and maybe some squirrels!) Chat Icon

Re: When you cut down a tree...

We have TONS of trees...and tons of wildlife... I'm completely enjoying the beautiful birds!
We're not planning on cutting any down completely...just trimming them back as there are so many our roof has moss growing on it!Chat Icon

Re: When you cut down a tree...

We are just the opposite. When we bought our house, the house was suffocated by trees, there was mold growing on our rooftop and you could not see the house from the road. We ended up cutting down 38 trees in all, and have not replaced them with new trees. We still have trees on our property, and we did add some bushes around our fence, but we do not plan on planting new trees where the old ones were. We have gotten many compliments on the house now that you can actually see it from the road.

Not on LI but we are replacing the tree we took down. Our city actually will pay 1/2 for our tree because CO does not have enough trees.

Yaphank. I saw one at my grandfather's house in Smithtown when I was in my early teens - so they were here once (that was over a decade ago, but I remember it so well!)

I'm a major garden & bird freak - I have a hummingbird that visits my yard - I live in Rocky Point. I bought a feeder but it NEVER touches the feeder, it goes for the flowers. Hummingbird feeders are PIA because you need to change the food every other day.

I actually took a pic of it but I am looking at the pic and it just looks like a blob Chat Icon

Re: When you cut down a tree...

Let me know if you want bird feeder tips, I've been feeding "mine" for years. Chat Icon

The only hummingbirds on Long Island are Ruby-Throated Hummingbirds. They migrate back between May first and May 10th. So they are around, but very rare to see unfortunately.

But the best place to see them is in this nature sanctuary that I can't recall the name of. They protect them from visitors when they're nesting.

I only know of a few people who have seen them in their own backyards. Mostly their hummingbird feeders attract ants and bees. Chat Icon

The Lorax speaks for the trees.

But now, says the Once-ler,
Now that you're here,
the word of the Lorax seems perfectly clear.
UNLESS someone like you
cares a whole awful lot,
nothing is going to get better.
It's not.

SO...
Catch! calls the Once-ler.
He lets something fall.
It's a Truffula Seed.
It's the last one of all!
You're in charge of the last of the Truffula Seeds.
And Truffula Trees are what everyone needs.
Plant a new Truffula. Treat it with care.
Give it clean water. And feed it fresh air.
Grow a forest. Protect it from axes that hack.
Then the Lorax
and all of his friends
may come back.

I still dream of seeing another.

Oh I should get some Suet too so maybe I will get a woodpecker or flicker. I hear em, but haven't seen em at my house yet.

I will be cutting down 4 and will not be replanting more. I am very upset about cutting down perfectly healthy trees but there location is not good for our home or our neighbors fence or home.

Kitty and I were talking about Flickers a while back. I love those guys but in these years, I've never been able to get a picture of one. Too skittish.

I had a suet cage but the #$@%$&% European Starlings ate the whole damn thing.

I'm a birdlover but when I found out what European Starlings and House Sparrows do to native birds, particularly the Bluebird, I don't like them so much anymore.

Re: When you cut down a tree...

yup we are!

as I mentioned in my other post, I already have plans for new trees, I just have to try to decide which ones.
I need to plan the planting better though because this tree was about a foot from the side of our garage as big as it is. So I want to give the new guys room to grow.

We belong to The National Arbor Day Foundation we have had great luck with their saplings!

Some evergreens we got from them, I planted in the garden and now they are the right size to be moved and planted in their permanent location.

FYI - Hummingbird lovers - get a Butterfly Bush! They love them, and even if Hummingbirds are not abundant in your area you will get lots of butterflies as well!
Chat Icon There are many other flowers and bushes that will help attract them too!

yeah introduced species are such ruiners. I actually am not a Grackle fan either. They prey on small birds. ALthough baby Grackles are the cutest!

The #1 bird I want to see is a Cedar Waxwing. They are my forever obsession.

ETA: The last flicker I saw was on the side of a parking lot in SMithtown (chilling on the grass eating something)! It was so exciting cause I was totally not expecting him!

Re: When you cut down a tree...

I see them on Bay Parkway, that little road that you take to get to the Jones Beach theatre. But as soon as I stop the car and grab the camera, they fly away. Chat Icon

I love their little bibs on their chest. Adorable!

I've never seen a Waxwing either. But there's a certain fruit bush that they love... with red berries, I can't think of the name of it. Winterberry? I'm not sure but they are so cool looking. Like little bandits.

We had a baby waxwing when I worked at the wildlife rehab. I LOVED him so much. He loved all his fruit, and his little waxy feather ends were so cute. Of course I named him Zorro (Chat Icon even though we weren't supposed to name them). I have never seen one in the wild though

Re: When you cut down a tree...

I just gave away my hummingbird feeder to my girlfriend in MA. She gets lots of them, and I didn't see a-one the whole time I had the feeder. We did see TONS AND TONS when we were in Colorado last summer, that's why I go the feeder.

My sister has a butterfly bush - every year she thinks it is dead but nope, I guess they are just late bloomers.

I get sparrows, chickadees, blue jays, pidgeons (ack), and some great cardinals at our feeders. The cardinals usually come by the family, lol!! Mommy, dad, baby boy and baby girl.

I hate how the trees are disappearing.

My girlfriend in Minneapolis told me the city is selling mature saplings for $15 to all residents!! BIG saplings!!

We had 2 trees in our backyard that had to be cut down because half of them fell down due to strong wind. We just planted a baby oak tree and plan to plant one more eventually.

I am dying to see a Cedar Waxwing as well as an Indigo Bunting.

I have a Northern Flicker couple that visit my yard/neighbor's yard every year...in addition to the other 3 woodpecker species that visit us. Love hearing them.

To answer the OP - we have taken down 1 tree and will be planting 7 saplings this weekend Chat Icon

Re: When you cut down a tree...

We had one little weeping cherry in the front yard when we bought the house and last spring we planted a pear tree. We are going to let that grow for a few years and see if we want to plant anymore.

How many of you ladies have birdhouses and do the birds use them? I put a whole bunch up last spring and not one got used.Chat Icon
