Re: When you cut down a tree...

I had one that was used by 2 different bird families every spring - one would finish and the other would move in. I could watch the mommas feeding the babies while I sat on my deck having breakfast (or lunch, or dinner...they eat a lot!!).

That tree was blown over Labor Day weekend, and the birdhouse destroyed. The saplings we put up are too small for a birhouse just yet....

Re: When you cut down a tree...

No birdhouse but we have an eagle in between our two garage doors (don't ask - previous owner LOL)...sparrows have been setting up house there every spring for years (this is the second time I'm seeing them...the previous owner hated it and would knock down the nest every year Chat Icon).

Some birds are finicky - maybe it's not high enough (or too high) or facing the wrong direction...or maybe the entrance is too small?

The only hummingbirds on Long Island are Ruby-Throated Hummingbirds. They migrate back between May first and May 10th. So they are around, but very rare to see unfortunately.

I still dream of seeing another.

Oh I should get some Suet too so maybe I will get a woodpecker or flicker. I hear em, but haven't seen em at my house yet.

We've seen one at my parent's house. My father has some flowering plant that attracts them apparently. I'm not sure what it's called, I'm sure you guys would know.

She was ornery. In the end, it wasn't an awful thing - the birds still came back every year to rebuild. Chat Icon She also idn't knock it down when the momma was nesting - she was ornery, not cruel. LOL Martha liked things a particular way...
