When you move to a new town how do you decide on a church to attend services?
We are moving this weekend And I really want to start attending mass on a more regular basis. There are many churches around us I just don't know how to choose.

When we moved, I went to a different church each weekend until I found one I liked- ie. the priest seemed to not make any comments that infuriated me and there were other young people there, not just 90 year old ladies.

That's what we did too. We even left one (10am mass) after 15 minutes bc everyone was so old and rushed to another church to make the 10:30am!
We went to 4 before deciding, and then we officially became parishoners.

I called around and also talked to a couple of the priests. I attended mass of the priest that was willing to understand my situation (me being Jewish, DH being RC and me not converting) and didn't insult me or make fun of my belly (I was pregnant at the time and one priest made the rudest comments) We attended mass for 3 weeks before joining.

I'm embarrassed to say after nearly 4 years we still don't really feel like we belong. We tried a small parish nearby & had a really bad experience after attending for a while. Then we tried another but its SOOO crowded. Then I wanted to try something other than the RC church because they rub me the wrong way sometimes, but we haven't found it yet. One of my new year goals is to find a house of worship that we like.

We luckily got married in the same area as the church we got married. Since we had purchased our home before we got married, we thought it would be nice to get married in that church since it was going to be ours....

We moved within the same town, so we were able to stay at the same church.
However, we tried 2-3 churches before we settled on the one we attend regularly.

I say attend mass at the churches of your choice. Try to pick one that has a young following too so you can meet/attend mass with people around your age/similar interests, etc.

Re: When you move to a new town how do you decide on a church to attend services?
i've been attending the same Church for the past 15 years and its like home to me. so even if i moved 10 miles away, i'd make the drive to stay with it.
2 points DH and i always consider is making sure to stay close to our families (for future baby purposes ) and to stay close to our Church.
eta: we were married in our Church and i plan on having all of our kids take their sacraments there so i could NEVER leave.

We went to two others around before we decided on our parish. We wanted to try them out to see which one fits us.

Re: When you move to a new town how do you decide on a church to attend services?
im confused.... a town has many churches... but one may be lutheran, another catholic, another presbyterian....
The only time ive seen more than 1 church of the same denomination is when there are 2 catholic churches in town- and the town is split based on which one you live closer too...

Re: When you move to a new town how do you decide on a church to attend services?
Another embarrassed poster here! We're in our town almost two years and haven't found a church that we like. We've tried several, but some weeks go back to Queens to where we attended services before we moved.
I hope to find a house of worship in 08 as we are having our baby in February.

Yes........technically it is.....but you you won't be STOPPED by the other church just because it's not in your district! I see this at work a lot....people live in one part of town but attend church in another just because they like the church better.

Where I live there are many Catholic churches in the vicninity...The one in another town is actually closer to us then the one that is technically in the town I live it

There is one Catholic Church just a few minutes down the road...so We will probably go there when the time comes.
