When your child has a terrible cough what more can you do?
Is there anything other than
-humidifier and tylenol that I can do??? He has been coughing throughout his nap...its getting worse. Ugh. I HATE this. We already went to the doctor last week and the cough was just starting. It's so phlegmy and he's so congested, poor kid..
Also, about how long do coughs last??? It's been 3 days of coughing!

Re: When your child has a terrible cough what more can you do?
We had this problem a couple of weeks ago...
My daughter is almost 11 months old so she couldn't have honey, but her ped gave us cough medicine at about 10 mos.
This is what the label says:
Albuterol/Hydroxyzi/Childs Su
It is prescription - I got it filled at CVS.
I gave 2 ML before bedtime and it worked like a charm.
I hope that helps! Sorry it doesn't seem to have a more definite name!
Also - cool mist humidifier, and 15 minutes in the bathroom with hot water running before bed.
She was all better in about 5 days.

Thank you I just placed a call to the pediatrician to see if they can fill a prescription but something tells me they won't..a few months ago they said they don't give out cough medicine...I am desperate and want him to feel better, i hope they can work with me!

Cool mist, crack window. If cough persists, take to pediatrician. I always follow up with them because sometimes the cough gets worse and they'll either prescribe medication or unfortunately just suggest cool mist & window.
My DD recently had croup and he suggested steriods for 3 days.

If you cup your hand and tap his back a few times a day, it will help break up the phlegm. Hope he feels better soon.

Re: When your child has a terrible cough what more can you do?
SO Sorry, I know its hard. My DS gets the WORST cough when sick. SO far I have avoided the steroids. But sometimes end up in the bathroom, with steam in the middle of the night, just to help him. I put the bed on an incline, we have humidifier on every night anyway, and the vicks vaporizer when sick.
Hope DC feels better soon

If he is phlegmy, cut back on dairy including milk. Dairy just makes more phlegm. He does need fluids though; see if you can get more water and juice into him. Even soup would be good.

Re: When your child has a terrible cough what more can you do?
Now I am getting nervous. My ped told me that albuterol is not a steroid. Is there something I am missing here? I know babies aren't supposed to have OTC cough medicines, but I thought that since this was prescribed by her ped it should be safe. Am I wrong? She's no longer taking it because she is better, but I'd like to know for the future....

Albuterol is NOT a steroid...it helps open bronchial passages when breathing becomes an issue due to a bad cough or cold etc...it is safe for babies, and i'm sure they prescribed it knowing it was ok!!
My ped. will not prescribe anything for johnny..they said humidifier, steamy shower etc...but to wait it out and if it continues to interrupt sleep or he stops eating to come in. I HATE this!!!
Thanks ladies!
