I always thought it was 2 spaces after a period if you're writing a formal letter or paper. I never doublespace on LIF or even in my work e-mails though.

Part of my job is writing and we follow AP style, which is 2 spaces after a period.

For that reason, people who learned to type on a typewriter were taught to put two spaces after a period at the end of a sentence.
That makes a lot of sense. I learned how to type on a typewriter in high school in 1989. They were still pretty common.
I noticed some websites will remove the space after you submit. I kind of like the double space, I guess it's just what I'm used to.
eta - LIF removes the extra space when you post.

I was taught 2, and that's what i usually do. Although when i text i only use one

I learned in typing class (Paralegal class/HS and College) it was 2 spaces. A new attorney started at my last firm and he typed with one. Managing partner MADE him put the extra space I dont think I could put only one space even if I tried!

It's too much of a habit so I'll keep on double spacing

1 for where I work. We used to do two when they wrote on a typewriter but now it has been made into a single space.

I was taught 2
I feel strange if its only one. That said I generally don't pay attention here that much. But at work I freak out of I see only one space. Feels like a run on sentence to me.
This stuff was HAMMERED into us by the MLA guide when I was in school.

2 spaces... i was taught that in highschool and again in college. I know some professors would circle if you just left one space!
On my iphone i automatically do 2 spaces so that way i do not have to put the period!

I do too...but one of those spaces is the '.' so you're only doing one space after the period

my memory is hazy, but i actually learned about this in a class somewhere.
* in the old days when they used typewriters, it was 2.
* then when computer word processing programs evolved, it became 1 because the program knows that it's after a period and makes the space the right size for you.
