Where can I get reasonably priced produce?

I am making a large fruit salad and don't feel like paying S&S prices for produce ($3 for a cantaloupe Chat Icon)

can anyone recommend a place near Holbrook/Sayville/Oakdale?

thanks!

foodie here....

unfortunately, from experience, I can honestly say you'll likely have to drive pretty far to get inexpensive produce. The only place I can think of is that large farm stand on sound ave in riverhead... (lewin farms?) Frankly, $3 for a cantelope is pretty much the going rate everywhere. at best, you might save 50 cents if they're on sale somewhere.

If you want to stay fairly local, I say read the circulars in the paper, and pick the one with the most fruit on sale and go.

frankly, though, when fruit is on sale this time of year (ex. cantelope, apples, pears) they usually are fairly flavorless.... so taking quality into account, I usually just go to fairway in plainview and sniff all the produce and buy what smells best.... they have fairly reasonable prices ($2.50 for strawberries, under $3.50 for other berries... but a cantelope still costs $3)

My mom always gets her produce at Meat Farms on Portion Rd. My friend buys hers at another meat farms (I think in Deer Park). I wish I had a meat farms near me ;(

there's a Pat's Farms near my parents (in Merrick) and the produce there is SO good and SO cheap! last time I was there cantaloupes were 84 cents each and $1 a lb for gala apples. wish there was a place like that by me!

they always have low prices like that. the place is kinda dumpy but the produce is amazing. the place is always a mob scene. just shows you how much supermarkets mark up everything.
