Where did you buy carpet?

DH and I have been getting estimate to re-carpet our small home. One company gave us what we "thought" was a reasonable quote and then called to say the price was going up nearly 25% due to "measurement errors."

Needless to say, we're fed up and looking for reccos on where to shop. I've heard Lowes/Home Depot are cheap but that they sub the work out and you can't be sure of who comes to install.

Any advice or recco, please ....

We're dealing with the same thing right now. We had a private business give us a quote, and compared to Lowes/HD prices it was fair. The problem is, we really don't want to spend that much. We found some "in store" carpet at Lowes that we like that would be half the price. I am going to give the smaller guy the chance to show me anything he may have in that prices, otherwise we'll use Lowes. And do what if they sub the work out? How hard is it to install carpet when that's what you do for a living? So I can't see that being a big problem.
