Where to stop on our way to Myrtle Beach- added question
We'll be driving to Mrytle Beach in April with our boys. Ideally we would like to leave on Friday, drive at least 8 hours, stay somewhere over night, then finish out the drive in the morning. Where would be a good place to stop? Somewhere in Virginia? North Carolina?
ETA- do you book the hotel in advance or do you just stop when you stop? I could get a hotel on Roanoke Rapids for around half price if I use hotwire. ($100+ on expedia $53 on Hotwire)

Where to stop on our way to Myrtle Beach
My parents usually stay in Lumberton, NC. It's nothing exciting but, there are a bunch of hotels just off of 95 and it's about 2 hrs from Myrtle (since you want to go at least 8 hrs).

Re: Where to stop on our way to Myrtle Beach
When we would drive down when I was younger with family, we would stop in Roanoke Rapids (i believe), NC off 95, but like the PP nothing exciting, just somewhere to stop to break up the trip a little bit.

Re: Where to stop on our way to Myrtle Beach
I'm not looking for anything exciting, just somewhere clean and preferable inexpensive to sleep for the night. I'm thinking of leaving around 2:00pm, drive for 4 hours, stop to eat dinner, drive another 4 hours, sleep for the night, and then another 4 hours in the morning. My in laws usually leave at 5:00am and drive straight through, but I'm thinking that might be too much for the kids.

I think if you left early in the morning and made stops for meals and stretching you should be able to drive without stopping overnight. It's not a long trip at all and if you have games and TV your kids should be occupied.
When I was a kid my parents would drive from Clearwater, FL to NY straight through. My sister and I would sleep, read, and play games.

Re: Where to stop on our way to Myrtle Beach
I'm sure we could do it I one day, but I think we would all be happier splitting it up. I know my kids, there's a really good chance they will take a nap in the afternoon and watch a movie. Then we could stop for dinner. Then I can put on a movie and they will fall asleep after and I can drive the next four hours. Then breakfast in the morning and maybe even some pool time if there's an indoor pool. Then we can finish up 4 more hours and be at our timeshare on time for check in.

we usually just paid when we stopped... the only reason i would do this is in case you decide you want to drive a little bit further you don't feel like you have to stop.. but its up to you.

That's exactly what I'm worried about. But half price is slightly appealing too. I'm also concerned that if the kids don't sleep in the car and are just done, that I would want to pull over and stop for the night.

Where to stop on our way to Myrtle Beach- added question
My parents usually reserve in advance. But, they aren't travelling with young kids.
Could you try to make the reservation through a discount booking site on the way through a Smartphone?

That may work. Can you do it like 20 minutes prior?

You may find this website helpful. They have hotels that half a mile within 1-95.
