Where to take Rocky?
Unfortunately the time has come for us to put Rocky to sleep. He has an autoimmune disease (GME) that affects his brain. He was doing well on steroids but he recently had a bout with horrible blood diarrhea (I say that bc it wasn't bloody diarrhea but just blood). With antibiotics the blood diarrhea stopped but her never fully recovered. He has gone downhill since and now can barely walk. He just lays in his bed. It is breaking my heart. I dont want to let him go but in my heart I truly believe it is his time. His quality of life right now is not a good one right now. In our horrible GME journey we have unfortunately had bad experiences with neuros and vets and don't want to take Rocky to any of the places we have dealt with. Can anyone recommend a compassionate vet where we can take Rocky to be put to sleep? I would like to take him this Sunday so my dh can be there with me as well. We are in Nassau south shore. Thank you!

Re: Where to take Rocky?
I only know of places in Queens. We took my parent's dog to Elmhurst Emergency Animal Hospital and they were excellent, very compassionate. But I just wanted to say I'm sorry for your loss and you're doing the right thing for Rocky.

Re: Where to take Rocky?
East Rockaway Veterinary Hospital, Dr. Selkowitz is the vet there and his staff is amazing. He has taken care of all of my animals, and I've unfortunately had to bring four animals to him when their time came and he was very compassionate and comforting. I cannot recommend them more highly.
He also regularly donates to a fund at Texas A&M Veterinary School (where he went) that provides money to pay for vet care to people who would otherwise have no choice but to put their animals to sleep because they can't afford costly treatment - which I thought was such a nice way for it to all come full circle, so while my dog couldn't be helped another animal could through his generosity. His office sent us a really nice card after we had to put our second animal to sleep within just a few months to tell us how sorry they were for what we'd gone through recently (they knew how much we loved our animals and how hard it was for us). We later got a letter from the school that said he had made a donation in our dog's memory.
I'm sorry you're going through this, and I know how important it is to have a peaceful goodbye for Rocky, sending you lots of hugs and prayers for you and Rocky.
ETA - I don't believe they have office hours on Sundays, but they have some late hours during the week and they are open Saturday mornings. HTH.

I am so sorry!!
My vet in Copiague was fabulous when I had to put down my two dogs.. I'd definately suggest Dr. Mauro (South Gate Animal Hospital) - but I'm not sure if they have hours on Sunday.

Re: Where to take Rocky?
I recommend our emergency vet where we took our beloved Buddy. They were so wonderful, very compassionate and my husband and I felt that it was very genuine. They're in Cobble Hill brooklyn though.

Re: Where to take Rocky?
I'm so sorry for what you're going through. I highly recommend Dr. Longo at A&A vet in Franklin Square. We took Sara there for a second opinion on a tumor and I'm so glad we made the trip there. She is just wonderful and compasionate. They are open on Sunday too. We had a very difficult decision to make with Sara and she stood by us every step of the way.

Re: Where to take Rocky?
I'm so sorry. Dr. Tonson of the East Meadow Animal Hospital is wonderful. Just a word of advice in case you've never had to go through this before....it's so important for your beloved animal to be relaxed before this procedure. When you make the appointment tell them that you would a like a tranquilizer for your dog before the procedure. Let the dr. give the dog the tranquilizer and once you feel the dog is relaxed, call in the dr. You can stay and comfort your dog until the very end and know that your dog was at peace before the end. You're in my prayers.

YES - I definitely second this. I had my dog given a sedative before and it was an extremely peaceful end, she didn't appear afraid or anxious, just totally relaxed. Very important and sometimes you need to be the one to ask for it, they don't always automatically do this.
