Re: Where we you....
Working as a teaching assistant on the N Shore. Someone told me when I was in the nurses office that a plane went into the WTC. I couldn't even fathom that it was commercial jetliner. I pictured a small plane.
When we finally realized what really happened the teacher that I worked with and I had to figure out whose parents may have been in the WTC that day and there were a few.

Re: Where we you....
I was at college (SUNY Albany) and in organic chemistry lab. I remeber the teacher coming in and telling us the first plane had hit the building- when I went outside everyone on campus was walking around in a daze, no one knew what to do. I went to my next class and then the dean of the school came around and dismissed us. Such an aweful day

Re: Where we you....
I was in Boston, Senior year in college. I remember coming out of my bedroom into the living room where 2 of my roomates (both also from NY) were watching TV as they were grabbing breakfast. Then all of a sudden the TV went to the news brief and I really thought it was fake, I couldn't believe it was real. We watched teh second tower get hit on the TV and frantically tried to call our families, but we couldn't get through for almost a whole day. My now husband was supposed to be down in the WTC for an interview later that morning and then get on a flight to Boston that night, neither of which happened that day... it still seems surreal!

Re: Where we you....
I was in CA driving to work when I turned on the radio all I heard were screams and the announcer saying, NY as we know it is now gone. I had no visual and no idea what happened. I really thought you all were taken out with a nuclear blast. I called my boss and screamed at her to turn on the tv and she told me what happened.
I spent the morning at work, calming down children and parents, while running to my office to cry in private. It took two hours to reach my sister who worked a block away. Thankfully she went in late that day and her train was turned around.
It was definately by far the worst day I can remember. I was so grateful to hear my family on the phone and know they were all ok.

Re: Where we you....
I was in Florida (Disney Land property). We woke up just before the 2nd plane hit. I though it was some stupid movie, so I turned the station and it was on every station. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. We had just woke up so it was not real to me for awhile. We tried calling home to NY, but the lines were busy for hours. My Mom finally got through to our hotel and she couldn't stop crying. We drove home from Florida several days later. It was the longest sadest trip I have ever taken. Every underpass we passed under had signs on it. I basically cried the whole way home. It was great to see all the support through each state we passed through. Then we hit NYC limits and I just wanted to turn around. It was scary. The smoke was still in the air. When we were still in Florida, because we couldn't come home (the bridges were closed down) we went to Disney when they opened up and it was so hard to have a good time. They always asked "where are you from" and when we relied "NY" they all said "I'm sorry". It is a day I will never forget.....ever!

Re: Where we you....
On my way to school at Adelphi, they let us go home and I watched on TV when the towers fell. I remember we were trying for an hour to get a hold of my uncle and were so scared. We were so happy when we finally got through to him - hugs and prayers to those of us whom never recieved that call.

Re: Where we you....
On the express bus on my way into the city for work...we never made it onto the expressway - the tunnel had closed and the buses were told to turn around and drop everyone off.
We ended up on College Point Blvd and wathced the smoke travel across the city skyline while listening to the radio say the Towers collapsed

Re: Where we you....
I was living in Boston and just pulling into the parking lot, hearing the reports of the first plane hitting the building, the announcers trying to figure out what had happened. I called DH at home and told him to turn on the TV. He spent the morning watching the events unfold. I was e-mailing friends in NYC trying to make sure they were safe, the receptionist at our office was frantically trying to find out more about which planes were involved because her daughter's fiance had flown out from Boston to CA that morning (he was on the plane that crashed in PA ) and DH kept me updated as he heard from friends and family back in NY. I stayed in my office trying to work, completely distracted, until they sent an e-mail out from headquarters telling us we could leave to go be with our families.

Re: Where we you....
I was in my office in garden city when one of my warehouse guys came in and said "i think somebody crashed into the WTC, can I put the tv on in the conference room?" He's kind of a kook anyway, no one thought anything of it, until we walked in and saw what was going on. then I remembered my sister was supposed to be at One WTC with a partner from her law firm. We couldn't get her on the phone, it was terrible. About 2 hours after it all happened my Dad (then NCPD) was able to get through to her office on an emergency line..she was there. At the last minute, the partner decided to take someone else with more experience. Unfortunately, the guy he took didn't make it. I am sorry for his family, but I couldn't help but be happy my sister didn't go.

Re: Where we you....
I was a HS teacher. i walked into the lounge when Sean Bradley (he only worked there one year, but i will never forget his name) told us that 2 planes hit the WTC - I thought small planes.
When I found out the scope, I called Dh who worked in Chinatown and called my parents to tell people DH was safe.
it was the hardest day of my teaching career by far.

Re: Where we you....
Working in midtown. My friend told me what was happening and I said "Whatever/okay" or something like that and continued to work. Someone from the CT office emailed me and asked if we were ok. Thats when I knew something was wrong. I listed to the radio with my co-workers until DH walked to meet me from Soho around 12.

I was still living at home with my parents. I was asleep when the first plane hit. My mom came and woke me up. I got to the tv just as the second plane hit.
Exactly how it went for me

Re: Where we you....
I was at work at Sunken Meadow golf course. My boyfriend at the time worked in Tower 1. I had no idea what was going on until one of my golfers came in and told me.
They put on the TV in the restaurant area. EVERYONE was calling me on my work line (cell phones didn't work up there). I remember my Dad saying to me that I had to prepare myself for the worst, my beloved Grandmother telling me this was just like Pearl Harbor
I finally got him around 12, he had no phone, but had been late to work and hadn't been there. I drove home on 25A to Miller Place and NO ONE was on the road. I finally got cell service and had 22 messages from my friends who thought I was dead b/c I used to spend the night in the city at least once a week.
Wow. I haven't wrote that out in ages.
That relationship ended, after a lot of sadness in the next coming months. I met DH 18 months later.

I had a very similar experience. I was in Key West and actually in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico when everything was happening. When we got to the small island that we were supposed to go snorkeling around, thats when the ranger there said that something was going on in NY. The twin towers fell down. I looked at my friend and said "what? the twin towers can't just fall down, *** is this guy talking about." We just sat there on this island, the only two New Yorkers and just cried. It wasn't until 5:00pm that day that we made it back to the mainland and saw all of the pictures and video. We drove home from Florida a few days later. It was a crazy experience, overwhelming and sad.

Re: Where were you...
it was the first day of my senior year of college. i had an 8 AM class, and like a 9:45 class. i got there early for the 8 AM class since it was the first day, so i was out of my car, etc before anything happened. that class ended and i was walking t my second class. i remember some random kid coming up to me asking if i had heard about the terriorits. i thought he was crazy BUT when i got to my next class, the professor told us what was going on- apparently his wife was in the area that day and he was worried about her, obvioulsy. i remember that i had the rest of the day off after that class so my parents were going to come by and go out to lunch that afternoon. i was driving back to my apartment and they were talking about it on the radio. when i heard it was a United Airlines flight, i freaked out!! DHs dad is a pilot for United and used to fly flight 93 ( the one that crashed out in PA) all the time. he actually knew the pilot who was flying it that day.... luckily, he and DH were ok... but i'll never forget that feeling! i think i spent the rest of the week just sitting on my couch watching it all unfold on TV

Re: Where were you...
I was running late for school that day ( I was in my first semester of grad school at Stony Brook), and so I didn't turn on the tv to watch the news like I always had. Had I turned on the tv, I never would have left my house. So I went to German class and I heard some students chattering about a plane that hit the WTC, and I imagined it to be a small plane. Then my cell phone rang as the class started and it was my dad. He was standing at the top of his building at work watching the towers burn. He very calmly told me to go to my car and come home as fast as I could because both towers had been hit and it was not a coincidence. When I stood up and told the class that the second plane hit, people acted like they didn't care, and the teacher wouldn't dismiss class. So I told them all I was leaving and that they should, too. I remember going home and seeing the fighter jets fly right over our house, and I was having such a bad anxiety attack, I had to take two Xanax to calm me down. I spent the afternoon trying to get intouch with everyone I knew who was in the towers and around the area.

Re: Where were you...
i was at college in New Paltz - i actually slept through the whole thing because i didn't have a TV in my room yet. i was woken up by my roomate's friends calling to ask if she was in the city because a bomb had gone off (they had no idea where New Paltz was).
i was totally confused until i called my mom and she told me what had happened i got dressed as fast as i could and left my building b/c i had no cell service and tried frantically for 2 hours to get in touch with my then-BF whose father worked in the towers. i was hysterical until he finally answered his cell phone and told me that his dad had been late to work that day - he normally left for work very early to get there by 8am, but for some reason he had decided to go in later on this one day. thank god for miracles
i spent the rest of the day at a friend's house watching the news and the video of the planes hitting the towers over and over and over... i think i smoked 3 packs of cigarettes that day.
i drove home 2 days later and cried as i began to cross the bridge because all i could see was smoke and no towers. it was so real for me at that moment.
i don't know anyone who lost their life that day, but i for all those who do.

Re: Where were you...
I was living in LA. My fiance, now DH, had JUST left that Sunday to fly BACK to NY. My BF in LA called me at 6 am PST and told me to put the TV on...
I was groggy and not sure what the flock was going on and then couldn't get in touch with ANYONE on the East Coast (my Dad, bro, and a bunch of friends worked in the city and a couple in the towers)
As my mind tried to wrap my head around what was going on, the first tower fell as I watched it on the Today show.
It took hours to get in touch with people back home and LA was so weird. Like a weird detachment. I mean, New York was my city and I took it so personal...everyone is LA felt sad, but it was a detached sad. Life resumed pretty quickly.
I wanted to get home so bad. I bought a ticket on priceline and flew home that next Thursday. (after throwing up in the airport bathroom before boarding)
There were 5 people on the plane. Literally. But I knew I needed to be HOME. (I moved back three months later)

Re: Where were you...
I was in my 2nd year of college at New Paltz also. I remember waking up for a morning class, getting dressed and seeing it on the news. I didnt want to but still went to class. When we all got there (It was Social and Philosophical foundations of Ed- I'll never forget) we all were saying "why are we sitting here. We should just go" So we did
I walked back to my dorm and stopped by DH's room. He and his roomate were up watching tv and as I walked in the 1st tower fell. We were just in absolute shock. More and more people walking by his room (door was open) kept coming in until we had like 30 people in a double occ. dorm room but nobody wanted to be alone at that moment.

Re: Where were you...
I was at work, teaching my 2nd grade class. People kept coming into my classroom and asking me if my husband, my BF at the time, was at work (he was on the NYPD at the time, in Midtown). I couldn't understand why everyone cared if he was at work...until the teacher across the hall filled me in. The principal sent me coverage, and I went to the offce to call my husband's cell phone. I'll never forget the sounds I heard in the background as I spoke to him. Alarms going off, the police radio going crazy....he told me he'd be at work indefinately until things calmed down a little bit. I was so grateful to hear his voice, and so overcome with sadness and nervousness over the whole situation that I couldn't even talk to him. I just cried.
