Re: Where were you...
At my parents house in my room, my mom called me in telling me a plane hit one of the twin towers, I told her not to freak out that something like this happened before to the empire state building, it was probably flying to low.......well I almost fainted when I saw the 2nd plane hit the 2nd tower! I didn't know what to do or where to go, I was so worried about my friends and family that were in the city.

Re: Where were you...
i was coming out of a sales meeting when my managers wife called freaking out telling me to tell him not to go into the city that day for an afternoon meeting with one of our accounts. all she told me was that some idiot flew a plane into the WTC building and that it was going to cause traffic and mayhem all day long. little did we know at the time that it was a terrorist attack. we found out a bit later when it was all over the radio. i remember it like it was yesterday.

Re: Where were you...
I was at the Early Show with a girl from a TV show that I was working on - I worked for PBS at the time. We were sitting there with producers watching tv when we saw the footage from the 1st tower on fire. Everyone was like ***? Then we saw the 2nd plane hit and someone I was with knew right away it was terrorists. All of the producers took off for downtown. I sat there with my colleague and this 20 year old girl from Africa who had never left her tiny little village until that week to come to NYC!
We all left and we got into a car to go back to work. I had no idea where to go. As we drove down 5th Avenue I saw the smoke coming from downtown. I got to my office on 33rd st and saw the 2nd tower come down, then the first and everyone was told to leave. I got into the streets and saw my boss who had been stuck on a subway and had no idea what happened. I told her and she freaked out. I walked to DH's office on 47th and 6th and met my best friend and her colleague there. We just sat there for hours not knowing what to do. Finally, DH and I left to wait for a ferry to NJ. As we were waiting, DH kept calling his friend who worked in WTC2. We waited a few hours for the ferry - we got on and I sat there as we rode across the water, teh smoke coming up from the hole saying to myself the world will never be the same again.
Got home after our bus got lost, jammed in a cab with 6 other people and just cried! I changed, showered, got so many calls and looked out our bedroom window to our friend's hosue who never came home.

Re: Where were you...
I was at work on LI and we always had Scott and Todd on. I remember thinking they were joking when they announced a plane had hit....then the second one and realized not a joke. I remember calling my best friend and hearing the panic in her voice as she picked up and screamed "JIM....IS THAT YOU????" She did not hear from her DH until 2pm that afternoon who worked for the NYSE. He was there in '93 and began leaving immediately after the first plane hit.
I remember going to lunch (my office did not close down until 2pm) and watching the tvs in Gillians and sobbing along with everyone else. When they let us go at 2pm I remember driving home on the LIE that had no cars on it. I will never forget the eerieness of driving on an empty LIE in the middle of the day.
to all who were there

Re: Where were you...
I was in college. I had class that morning at 9:05. When the first plane hit I was in my dorm room getting dressed, my roommate was asleep. I had no idea that anything happened, it was such a gorgeous sunny day I remember. I remember that day so clearly, what I was wearing even. I walked over to class and my professor said something happened to the WTC he heard on the radio but didn't go in detail so I had no idea. I walked to my next class, everyone on campus was saying what happened, I heard someone say one of the towers fell, I couldn't believe it I was just shocked. My class was cancelled, I went back to my dorm room and just sat there with my friends and watched the coverage on tv and prayed and felt numb. I could hear the ambulances on the Grand Central Parkway all morning and afternoon. What a terrible day

Re: Where were you...
i was at kohls... i had just got a call to start a new job and if i could be there as soon as possible. so after kohls and just pulling into my drive way i thought on the radio they where talking about the first attack on the towers only to realize that it was happening again i flew in my doors and threw on the tv. my heart sunk... i turned to keith and thanked him for being at myside as i do not think i could handle something like this alone.
so i go to this job and as i walk in there is a american airline pilot sitting there with his wife when he got the call. they wanted all pilot's in person to get a head count... the wife begged him not to go she stayed with us as we listened in horror on the radio. she kept trying to get her dh with no luck. then finally she did and he said she was on his way back to her we kept her company till he returned... i will never forget watching her looking out the window for him. she stayed with us till he got back. she did not want to be alone. a job i will never forget having

Re: Where were you...
I was at my house on LI . My entire kitchen was being remolded by a contractor that worked with my husbands Army unit as a part timer. My counters were being installed Sept 12!! I was being lazy in bed that morning because I did not have to go into work until 11am and my DH said he would drop off the kids at the sitters on his way to the Armory. I then got a call from our contractor and he said that there was a problem I thought he meant something about my countertop??? He told me to turn on the TV and that there was an accident in NYC and he (with my DH) would probably have to go into the city. I turned on the TV and watched the second plane fly into the towers. I was speachless I hung up with him and tried calling my husband who had gone to work in Civi's(civilian clothes) that day and for whatever reason I said he is going to need his uniform but I could not get through to his cell phone. I collected up his uniform and started driving to his unit stopping by the babysitter to kiss my boys and as I was on sunrise hwy I saw these construction workers and remember thinking they had no idea what was happening it was very surreal. On the way to my Dh I think OH MY GOD my Brother Works there and try calling his cell then I finally got through to his house and he answered the phone saying he had taken off that morning to go surfing because it was so nice out(to this day I believe my grandpa had something to do about that) When I saw my husband I broke down in tears he already knew that they were being sent to WTC that afternoon and he would be at Ground Zero for 3 weeks afterward. I was terrified that he was going there!!!
I remember hearing about the pentagon being hit and that my husbands best friend through his army career worked there (it took 4 days to hear from him)
I went to pick up my kids and watched the towers fall it was so numbing and surreal. In my shock I took my boys and drove to my parents house where for days I did not sleep and just keep my boys very very close waiting for updates from my hubby.
Thank you for letting me ramble it really helped.
to all those who lost anyone they knew or loved that awful day

Re: Where were you...
I was still in school (thank goodness b/c alot of people I knew from SUNY SB that I should have graduated with - were working downtown)
I luckily didn't have class that day at FIT
so I was home
my brother and sister were both away at school and couldn't get in touch with anyone - they thought I was in the city- b/c the new semester just started- they didn't know I had tuesday off
my Uncle (NYPD)- who was there after the first bombing had to take his mother to the doctor that morning- and watched in all unfold on the bridge- and then went for the rescue operation

Re: Where were you...
I was heading to class. Everyone was leaving the building, with a panicked look on their face. A friend came up to me, I asked what's going on, she said, classes are cancelled, go home and turn on the TV.
I rushed home, turned it on and saw what happened and spent the rest of the day trying to get in touch with my parents and friends in NY to make sure everyone was ok.

Re: Where were you...
In my office across the street from the towers. I remember when the first plane hit I grabbed my bag ran out and headed for the stairs. I didn't know what happened but I knew something was wrong.
I remember running out to the street & seeing body parts. The second plane flew over & myself & a coworker ran into a building for "safety".
We ran to the Seaport. I remember thinking at least there I could jump in the water if I had to. I'm not sure how that would have helped but that was how I was dealing with what was going on.
I finally got through to my family and DH (BF at the time) who were obviously frantic. I remember walking (almost running) over the 59th Street Bridge thinking it was going to blow up.
When I got off the bridge I turned on to Skillman Ave. & like a dream my DH & brother came running over to me. DH told me later that he told my brother that they were never going to find me in the crowd but my brother said trust my she'll turn on to Skillman. He knows me too well.
I don't think I've been the same since.
Thank God I took the stairs that day, 2 people in my building died in the elevator when the towers collapsed.
