Whether to add your small DC to dental coverage...something to think about

I thought of posting about this yesterday but forgot.

I didn't add my DS to my dental coverage until he was 2 because I figured you don't start taking them to the dentist until after that age and I wouldn't need it.

I was going the same route with my DD. She DD is now 18 months and I didn't add her to the dental plan... wa splanning on adding her at the end of this year when she is 2.

Something happened to her that makes me realize I would do things differently if I had to do it all over again and I wanted to share.

Last weekend DD slipped in the bathtub and chipped her front tooth. It seems to be fine, with the exception of the missing chunk of tooth. She had no bleeding, no discoloration, etc.

But I can't help but realize that if she needed to go see the dentist, we don't have her added to the dental insurance and would have paid for everything out of pocket.

I just thought I would share that story with anyone who is trying to figure out when to add their DC to their dental plans. Looking back after this experience I would have just added DC immediately in the event of a tooth emergency!

Something similar happened to Alex when she was 2 - she fell on her teeth on hardwood floors and they turned grey. Thank goodness we had dental coverage for her at the time!

Ooh man, I hope they were OK!

It's funny because prior to this happening, I kept thinking that she didn't need to be on the dental coverage yet because she didn't need to go for a cleaning. I wasn't even thinking about the "what ifs" when it came to an injury.

I guess I should have known better since my BFF's DS had to have his 2 front teeth pulled at the age of 3 because he fell and loosened them!

My dentist reccommended no dental insurance till 2.

I think a repair at 2 would, for me, cost less than paying for dentall insurance for 24 months.

Well then it may depend on what your coverage is like. And when I say "your", I'm not specifically talking about you, I'm talking about everyone!

Dh add dd when he added me to it. It was the same price for one dependent or 4 so he figured ah might as well add her now.

I totally agree. My coverage is expensive & only covers 50% of big work.

Teacher's dental insurance, on the other hand, is pretty comprehensive.

Gotta do the math.

I also agree w/ adding DC immediately- we did it with DS at birth and I am thankful as he wound up knocking a tooth out!!!

there was nothing that could be done, but it was nice to know that at least the dentist visit was covered 1000%
