which brand of paint is best?
i have lowe's coupons (they only sell valspar and olympic) and i also have coupons for sherwin williams. however, from what i can see, benjamin moore is the most popular. is this because of cost? color selection?
TIA!!

Re: which brand of paint is best?
Definitely not b/c of cost as BM tends to be pricier than some other brands. My FIL is a retired painter and swears by BM - smoother application requiring less coats. He does also like Sherwin Williams but DH seems to be loyal to BM so that's all we've used.
As for colors, you can basically bring any color chip to any paint mixer and get it in any brand. Might not be a 100% match, but it usually works.

My dad also painted for many years & swears by BM, he said it covers best & lasts & is a quality paint.
Consumer Repts used to swear by Behrs but I think in the last 2-3 years BM has taken over.

Re: which brand of paint is best?
I always thought BM was overpriced and a waste until I actually used it. I will never use any other paint. It is that much better!

Re: which brand of paint is best?
I also had a lowes GC and thought about getting paint from there, but the girls on here convinced me to go with BM. I will never buy any other paint, BM paint goes on so smooth (didn't even need 2nd coats in some rooms) and the color selection is awesome!

Benjamin Moore. Valspar was horrible for us. DH painted 2 rooms with it 3 years ago and already repainted 1 over with BM and plans to do the other in the next few months.

Re: which brand of paint is best?
"Best" is a relative term. For me, at this stage in my life (having two DC), "best" means "healthiest", and I'm looking heavily into the no-VOC paints, so I'm not putting DC into a room filled with excess chemicals.
For some, "best" means most color selections (although pretty much everyone can color-match now....), easiest to put on, single-coat coverage, most mildew resistant, cheapest, etc, etc....

Re: which brand of paint is best?
We bought a brand new house and started painting last year.
At first, we did 5 rooms with BM and paid a FORTUNE for it. For the last 2/3 rooms we used Behr and Olympic and saw no difference at ALL and saved alot of money.
BM was so inconsistent. In some rooms, it was perfect and you only needed one coat... in others, you needed two or three.
dont waste your $$

Re: which brand of paint is best?
I think it really depends on the walls really. I went with BM because everyone on here like it so much. But when we painted our house (that wasn't taken care of by the old owners & we hear that the builder didn't use that great of products) we ran into some problems with the paint. The walls weren't that smooth in a lot of places. We should have primered, but the previous owners had just painted the whole house flat white before we bought it, so we thought that was good enough for the primer. I wish we would have primered first, maybe that would have helped. Some areas we had to keep painting over. But we did love the color choices with BM. We are still happy we went with BM. But when we redo our den/family room we might buy No-VOC paint, so then we will be not be using BM. I think with any paint, priming first is the key to a good paint job in the end. GL!

Re: which brand of paint is best?
We used BM paint based on recommendations. It is easy to paint with and usually you only need one or two coats. However - it does not seem to be as durable as the Behr we used a couple years earlier in another room. The BM paint seems to chip every time something bumps into the wall (like the back of a chair or a toy my son hits or throws at the wall). My son's toy room is done in Behr and he is always throwing things, rolling trucks on the wall, etc and the paint still looks like we just applied it. It did take two or three coats so the initial coverage during the application isn't as good, but we found it to be much more durable.
We tried the Valspar and actually returned it - it was that bad. It did not work for us.

I'm a tax accountant and have about 15 clients that are painters and they all use Benjamin Moore (we know this because of their materials receipts )

Re: which brand of paint is best?
we used the BM aura paint for 3 rooms and have been happy so far. we could have gotten away with 1 coat but did 2 b/c we had to spackle the walls quite a bit. it went on well and we love the colors. i can't comment on durability b/c we just painted about a week ago.

Re: which brand of paint is best?
We used Sherwin Williams (DH had a friend who works for them so we got a discount) and were really happy with it! I was a little nervous at first because most people use BM as you had mentioned but, we have no regrets.

Re: which brand of paint is best?
When we were painting our house we used both BM and SW. We preferred SW over BM by a long shot. SW also has more sales and coupons. They also have low VOC paint.
