Which hospital...Good Samaritan (West Islip) or Southside (Bay Shore)?
My doctor is affiliated with both and said I can choose which one I prefer. I haven't lived in West Islip long enough to know much about them. I'd like to hear from anyone who knows more about them or has given birth at either. So far I've been told Southside has better maternity ward but Good Sam has better Emergency care incase anything happens. Southside has the option of an individual room but Good Sam is also right down the block from my house. That's all I've heard so far.
I appreciate all responses!

Re: Which hospital...Good Samaritan (West Islip) or Southside (Bay Shore)?
hi..
I had my first son at good sam. They were really good untill i went to maternity. Then it was a ok... I had a c-section and i was upset that i didnt have enough time to recover before they gave me the baby, and they wouldnt let my husband stay with me. Now im due in 6 weeks and im going to southside..im alot happier because i heard they have private rooms.. so im planning to have my husband stay with me :)

I had a scheduled C-section at Good Sam with DD 3 1/2 years ago...I remember that I was in recovery for a WHILE before I got to the room and got to see DD....For the most part, the staff was great, with a few nurses that were an exception...
I didn't have a private room, I had no roommate for the first 24 hours...then I had roommate. The thing I liked LEAST was the sharing a bathroom with four people! (though the room attached to the bathroom was empty until my last day)
OVerall, I had a good experience...I will go on my Doc's reccomendation (he does both Good Sam and Southside as well), but will likely be at Good Sam again.

I had a vaginal birth at Southside. I had a great experience there! The nurses in L&D were fantastic as well as the nurses in maternity. I had a roommate but she didnt speak english so she never spoke to me besides saying hi and bye. The only person you share a bathroom with is your roommate and it wasnt bad.I have nothing negative to say about Southside. They also have a buffet for breakfast and lunch which was really good

I had DD at Southside and I loved it. The L&D nurses were great, the maternity nurses were great. Everyone was amazing and so kind and helpful. Great experience, no complaints.
I was also at Good Sam a few weeks later for surgery. They were also good and I had no complaints but I can't speak to their maternity ward as I was on a surgical floor.

We are delivering at Southside and I have heard wonderful things about the maternity ward. We were also in the ER last week (I had some bleeding) and they were great and reassuring.

I had my son at Good Sam last February and can not say enough great things about it. The nurses were amazing and so was the overall experience. I will def. be having baby #2 there when the time comes.

If I had my choice, I would choose Good Sam only b/c they have a level 1 nicu center. If anything, God forbid, happens the baby can stay at Good Sam and not be transferred to another hospital.

I agree..the NICU was amazing. I had a csection and all of the nurses were great. I had a private room because the maternity floor was quiet. If I had to share a room it would have been tough the rooms were so small. But the nurses were amazing so it would have been worth it

I plan to deliver at Good Sam. One, my doctor prefers Good Sam over Southside. Two, the NICU is level I which makes me feel comfortable should the baby need to go there.
I was in L&D a couple of weeks ago and was really impressed by the staff. One nurse rubbed me the wrong way, but that can happen at any hospital. They were very attentive, thorough and detailed, and truly cared about us. The nurse even kept checking on us just to see if we wanted something to drink, eat, a blanket...very sweet.

Re: Which hospital...Good Samaritan (West Islip) or Southside (Bay Shore)?
I had DD#1 at Good Sam, and wasn't really a fan. I loved the labor area and had a fabulous nurse and anesthesiologist. However, the maternity ward was cramped, overcrowded, and the nurses were not that nice and knew nothing about nursing, and tried pushing me to just give DD formula, even though they knew I was BFing. I had a terrible roommate and I really started the motherhood process off on the wrong foot. I have since switched doctors and have the choice between Southside and Good Sam. I will most likely choose Southside, but the whole NICU issue concerns me. I am going to talk to my new doctor about it at my next appt.
