Re: Which house would you pick?
I have to agree with Ave1024 - I would wait for a bigger home with a better lay out in area #1. It is more upscale and a better commute. DOnt settle

Re: Which house would you pick?
#1- there will always be something bigger and better but you have to think about your daily life. Another 40 min.s of travel in addition to the addit time you are taking on by moving = misery. It already bites to commute, why make it even harder!

Neither.
I'd wait for a larger house in house #1's area.
I agree with this.
I say house #1. If you can make it what you want it to be in the long term.
I wouldnt wait for a larger house near #1, because there are some many what ifs in that scenario. What if, its too much money/out of your budget. What if, you cant get a nice lot (maybe big in size but awakward in layout What if, you find the perfect house but lose it to someone else Just my opinion but if you can make house #1 what you want it to be, and the size is what you are looking for (not where you think oh in 5 years we will need to move again, I say go for it_) I would rather pay less for a house and put my money into improvements that are my taste and fit my life than buy a house that is done, more money, but not my style.

House #1 is the entry level into the neighborhood. We could not buy an even bigger house in that area. An extension would be cheaper than buying a bigger house.

I would go with House # 1!!! I think location is very important. If it gets you into the town you want..then do it. You can add on then when you are ready and make it the perfect size for your family.

Then go with house 1

Re: Which house would you pick?
You can't change a commute...20 minutes each way (on a good day) almost an hour extra every day with my family.....sold! I left my last job with a substantial pay cut, just to have more time to be with my family. The layout can always be updated to meet your needs when the time is right, but NYC is not moving.....unless you invest in an airplane, the commute is what it is.
I say number one for sure!
