which would you take?
Which position?
1) Catholic School, about $30,000 starting salary, 10 minutes from home
2) NYC School, about $50,000 starting salary, a minimum of an hour commute

Personally, I would DEFINITELY take the Catholic School position. For SO many reasons. One, having a baby, it's important to be to be closeby, two, a commute is not worth 20K to me. ETA: There's a slew of other reason, as well. For me, I'll never teach in a public school, it's just not the place for me. If it were an independent private school, it'd definitely seal the deal for me.
That's what I am thinking. The commute just seems so crazy and I would love being 10 minutes away. What are independent private schools? I am only aware of catholic or jewish based schools?

Re: which would you take?
They are just that, independently owned schools. Alternatives to public and parochial schools. They are all over the country Check out NYSAIS

Since you will soon have two little ones, I would take the job closer to home!

Definitely #2
For the following reasons:
pension tenure teacher training is better usually better benefits- health insurance, etc. union protection
Does it financially make sense to work for 30K with two kids in daycare?
I taught in Catholic school, we had no set amount of sick days, we HAD to do an extra curricular activity, the class sizes were large (38 kids to a class), could get fired on a moments notice... completely up to the nuns.
It's almost always easier to move from a NYC position to a LI public school position than a Catholic school position to a LI public school position.
I'd take the NYC position and keep looking on LI.

Re: which would you take?
Another big factor is health insurance. How are you on this? If your husband is primary on this, I guess the Catholic school, but NYC health benefits are not to be laughed at, plus are pension plans (yes, more than one) are terrific. But having done the hour commute, it's rough.

Re: which would you take?
Is it difficult to get a teaching position in these schools. I looked at the website and was always interested in teaching at these private schools but I'm not sure what they look for? TIA!

Re: which would you take?
also think about the pay increases - what are your chances at increases in the private school?
not that the UFT is so great, but at least its some form of union....
eta: also, in the city, you would be able to transfer schools in the system - FH started in Jamaica and ended up in Bayside, which he loves! and he has gotten interviews at many LI schools this year.

my husband's company fully pays for the premium for the family plan. so insurance isn't an issue!!!

Re: which would you take?
I would take the NYC job. You could work there for 3 years and get tenure and try to get a job on LI.
Also, the time you work in a Catholic School doesn't count towards the NYS Teachers' Retirement System. A lot of people have to work a lot longer because they spent time working in private schools.
Just another perspective to think about.

My salary has almost doubled in 5 years It depends on the school, but private schools, the right ones, will pay to keep good teachers.
wow thats great!!

Re: which would you take?
nyc, definitely goes toward retirement and if you get hired in another school they won't count the private school years worked.

Re: which would you take?
well... there are good and bad to both sides... but to me, family time is SOO important and it wouldn't be worth commuting so far everyday- i would want to have more time with my kids... BUT, you have to look into the daycare costs for 2 kids- that can really add up, so how much of that 30 K would go to taxes and daycare costs? would it even leave you much "extra" money? or is money not so much of an issue- is it just that you want to keep your foot in the door of a career?? LOL lots to think about!

Re: which would you take?
eta: most nyc school teachers leave right after dismissal because of the commute home. so i leave right at 3:15. Would you feel obligated to stay after school hours at the catholic school especially being your first year there.
