eta: most nyc school teachers leave right after dismissal because of the commute home. so i leave right at 3:15. Would you feel obligated to stay after school hours at the catholic school especially being your first year there.

i definitely wouldn't want to stay after school in the city. i would want to be out right away.

the thing that is attracting me more to the catholic school is the closeness to my house.

Right, and even though it is close to your house, Would you be expected to stay after an hour or so?

Re: which would you take?

With two small children, I would definitely take the job closer to home.

I think either place you are going to be required/expected to have some late days, so better to be closer than further away.

I think the big question - does it pay for you to work for $30k? How much is daycare going to be for 2 small children?

Which position?

1) Catholic School, about $30,000 starting salary, 10 minutes from home

2) NYC School, about $50,000 starting salary, a minimum of an hour commute

Definitely #2

For the following reasons:

pension
tenure
teacher training is better
usually better benefits- health insurance, etc.
union protection

Does it financially make sense to work for 30K with two kids in daycare?

I taught in Catholic school, we had no set amount of sick days, we HAD to do an extra curricular activity, the class sizes were large (38 kids to a class), could get fired on a moments notice... completely up to the nuns.

It's almost always easier to move from a NYC position to a LI public school position than a Catholic school position to a LI public school position.

I'd take the NYC position and keep looking on LI.

i agree here, and not only does the pay make a difference, the nyc exp will soon

Re: which would you take?

I personally wouldn't want to work in a catholic school so I would choose option 2. Good luck.

Re: which would you take?

Honestly, I'd go with the city. Working in the city looks stronger on a resume than a private school, making it easier to get a job on Long Island after a couple years.

Re: which would you take?

I commute about an hour to my school and you need to think about GAS!!!! I spend soo much money on that alone! Also, as a first year teacher the purchases add up as well!! It's definately worth it, but a few things to think about!!
