while trying on clothes - WWYD - and retail girls, come in
Tonight I went to try on some new clothes. I tried on a shirt and while taking it off, the strap pulled off the shirt and broke. I don't even think it could be sewed back on. How embarrassing. I was mortified.
Anyway, what would you do in this situation? Would you tell, and if you did, what would you say and most importantly, would you expect to have to pay for the item?
To the girls in retail, have you encountered this before? Do most people tell and if so, what is the policy?
Just trying to get an idea of what most people do in this scenario and what role the store should take.
thx.

it might have been damaged before you tried it on and just "weakened" afterwards.
to be completely honest, I'd probably just put it back or at least give it to the store clerk and say "this is damaged."

I think it was my chest that did it. All I kept thinking was that they'd sigh and wonder why a busty and kind of overweight chick would try on (and then ruin) a shirt.
First time in awhile that I really cared what people would have thought about me.
The store wasn't an high end store with quality clothes, FWIW..cheapo stuff that is made without care, which made me feel a little better.

I would say that is the store's problem, not really yours. In my opinion, any piece of clothing they sell should be able to withstand normal wear (ie: taking it on and off multiple times)

This has happened to me in H&M. I was trying on a dress and it ripped. This was when I was much thinner so I didn't care. I called the guy over (yes, a guy) and told him what happened. He said that many of those dresses came back damaged so he wasn't surprised. He apologized and I didn't buy the dress or have to pay for it!

I had to be CUT out of a dress in the loft once because the zipper completely malfunctioned and three salespeople couldnt get me out of the dress. I was absolutely mortified! The dress fit me fine but there was no getting out of it. I didnt have to pay for the dress and the woman assured me it has happened more than a few times in the past..

I would just say that it was damaged. I would not expect to have to pay for it unless it was obviously intentionally sabotaged (i.e. someone wrote all over a shirt or used spray paint.) I would expect a shirt to be able to be tried on and would chalk it up to defective manufacturing.

Re: while trying on clothes - WWYD - and retail girls, come in
I used to be a manager in a clothing store. I would say it would be 50/50 when it came to who told us and who didn't. If someone did bring it to our attention, whether it was their fault or not, we would just take it from them and say thank you for letting us know. We would never have made a customer pay for something.

No absolutely not would they expect you to pay. You could just leave it behind and they would damage it out. I've seen it all, I've even had to cut women out of dresses and skirts because the zippers got jammed. These things happen sometimes stuff is just defective.

I'd give it to the clerk & say this strap is broken. If she asked if I broke it, I'd say yes. My feeling is if a strap breaks that easily, it's shoddy material & not well sewn - and I'm not buying it.

What is it with the zippers at the LOFT???
I have 3 skirts from there and all of them I've had to either return or get fixed because the zippers broke.
The last time happened this past Tuesday - I came home from work, went to change out of my work clothes and couldn't get the zipper to go down for nothing. DH tried and eventually he ended up having to cut it off.
The last couple of times I've had it happen, I've managed to shimmy myself out of it with the zipper still closed. This skirt was a pencil skirt - no room to shimmy but I am defiantely not buying any more skirts from there.

Re: while trying on clothes - WWYD - and retail girls, come in
i work at a large non profit organization with a gift shop...we dont have a clothing issue but they do have the "you break it you buy it policy" which i think is terrible. we have a tight space where strollers can barely fit through so people banging into things and knocking things off the tables happens...and we are a kid friendly location. anyway, my point is, being that i know we make people pay for damages, i would have totally just put it back and not mentioned it.

Unfortunately I find that a LOT in H&M! I nearly had to be cut out of a dress because of a faulty zipper. I called my sister struggling and sweating trying to get out of it. SOMEHOW I got it over my boobs and one arm out and then it was easy to get off.
I'd just tell them it was damaged and keep it moving.
