Honestly if I were a snowbird I would 100% have stayed down in Florida this year. Why come back to this shit hole? It's like coming back to prison.
Agree. I am pushing DH almost daily now to make the move down. Forget the mask reason - just calmer pace does it for me. Plus I’m over NY and the people here. I need space and a lot more sunshine
Just as an FYI, as I mentioned above, we are in the purchase of buying a condo down there and the Real Estate market is completely bananas. We actually bought a house in South Carolina right outside of Charleston last summer because we were planning to move there temporarily if schools didn't open here. Our plan is to retire there so we figured worst case it will be an investment property so we can hedge any real estate increases in that area. We rent it out and cover all our expenses and then some and the market exploded. The price already increased about 25% compared to comps. Our current renters already offered to buy it from us because they can't find anything to buy! It's insane.

We are in the process of buying a condo in Boca for our parents to use and when we were down there in March, Palm County had a mask mandate and it really didn't seem any different than up here. I was told other places didn't have the mask mandate and it was completely normal. The building we are buying in still has Covid restrictions in place but we had our orientation yesterday and they said they expect them to loosen them soon. I don't know if I could do Florida all summer. I had a client in Tampa and spent a few months there over the summer and it was brutal. If we ever move down south I think we will still spend the summers up North at our house in Martha's Vineyard.
It's sooooooooo insanely h-e-l-l hot in the summer. I don't know how I lasted 4 years down there. Definitely was not for me.
It isn’t for me either. I don’t even mind the heat—it’s just not my kind of place at all.
We have had some lovely short vacations there, but I lived down there for 3 months with DH before we got married and couldn’t wait to leave.
I didn't like anything about it other than the proximity to Disney. lol Wasn't the right lifestyle for me and I didn't really like FL living, there were so many gated communities which felt weird to me. Nice place to vacation but I couldn't live there again.
I don't think I could live there and raise a family there because it's not for me either, but man do I love the beaches! I could definitely snowbird down there. When we went to look at places in Boca I was full on prepared to hate everything about it and I seriously felt like I was in heaven. The beaches are amazing and Boca and Delray are so nice to walk around. Tons of nice restaurants and shopping. Again, not my cup of tea all year round or with kids but I will definitely spend time down there when my kids are out of the house.

While we sit here and argue over masks and corona
There is no one place that is utopia. There is good and bad to almost any state/region. You couldn't pay me any amount of money to live down south, but I love New England, and I am sure there are many people who would not enjoy living there. Different strokes for different folks.

I have heard the west coast is nice too. I would consider there before the East or in the middle where there is no ocean breeze.

Did you live in an area farther away from the water? I ask because when my parents lived there they were more on the coast and while it was hot, when we traveled more inland to my inlaws, you could tell the temperature difference.

While we sit here and argue over masks and corona
A majority of my family moved to FL. They would never come back to NY if you paid them. I couldn’t live there because I’m not a fan of hot weather but I do love the way the state lives

I live in Upstate NY. My DH and I would like to move somewhere slightly more temperate - like southern PA, DE, or MD. So we would still be close to our family, but less snow. With that said, we will see where our DS lands and make a decision based on that.

Most people don’t come back to NY whether they move to FL or elsewhere. It is not worth it financially and mentally for most.

For me the perfect thing would be to live in different places for different times of year. I love the south in the spring, I love the Rocky Mountain area for the winter, I love New York/New England in the fall, and Martha's Vineyard in the summer. I'm hoping once my kids are out of the house we are able to move around from place to place.

Luckily my husband and I can work from anywhere so even if he's not retired we can probably move around a lot.

I would wait a year at this point and hopefully it settles down by then. We feel like we are totally overpaying but time is of the essence for us because we are buying it for our parents and they aren't getting any younger.
Yeah we are kicking ourselves that we didn't buy before their real estate market exploded with the mass exodus of 2020. We can't live there yet ,but we should have bought and rented it out until we were ready. Ah, 20/20 hindsight.
Must be a ton of assholes that want to live outside of NY that are driving up the real estate prices in Florida and South Carolina!

Yeah, the ironic thing is I think to myself "you're such an asshole for continuing to live here!!!"
But I stay because my kids love it and we have roots and I can't see uprooting them at this point. If we were unhappy here I would be out of here but the reasons we want to move are largely superficial.

That's why I'm still here. My daughter has roots, we still have family etc. Once DD is out of school and into college or wherever life takes her, we'll probably go. If I didn't have a child, I'd probably have gone already to be honest. But I don't want to uproot her...that's my main thing right now

we will see where our DS lands and make a decision based on that.
This where we are. I could say "I want to go here or there" but ultimately I won't want to be far from DS.
I don't need to be up his ass, but I would like property close by enough to help with childcare if needed and be able to visit easily.
I am hoping we can afford a place in each climate because I hate both extremes lol.

See I have three kids so most likely they will all end up in different places. So I feel like for now we just anticipate doing our thing and visiting the kids when and where we can. Who knows though. I've learned it's better not to try to plan these things.

Did you live in an area farther away from the water? I ask because when my parents lived there they were more on the coast and while it was hot, when we traveled more inland to my inlaws, you could tell the temperature difference.
We were on the coast, maybe 5-7 minutes from the water. We were east coast, Palm Bay/Melbourne area. Inland is stuffier but the coast is still SO hot. And the humidity!!!!

We have friends down in Delray, nice area. Lots to do. ITA with you. I like to vacation in FL for sure but full time living, especially in the summer months, is . LOL
