White noise machine
First, happy new year! I have a couple of questions re: white noise machine. DD is 5 months old and is a great sleeper at night, but terrible napper. I have to tiptoe around the house to try not to wake her up. I'm thinking of getting the machine so it will drown out any noise around her. Do you think it's worth it? Do you worry that your DC will always need it growing up to get to sleep? If you have one, where did you get it? Thanks so much.

Re: White noise machine
I was adamant against using one when I was pregnant. But DD is just like me, she's a light sleeper. That, coupled with the fact that we have a small ranch and her bedroom is right by the bathroom and right by the kitchen, makes her VERY easy to wake up. We have a small fan that's slightly noisy that we keep on the floor in her room (pointing away from her obviously!). We take it with us when we go away, b/c she's a light sleeper.
It may be setting us up for dependency later on, but there's not much we can do with a small house and a very light sleeper.
ETA: DD is 6 months old and we've used it for almost her whole life.

Re: White noise machine
We had one for Ds b/c he is the lightest sleeper!!! It was the best thing we ever did. We used it until this summer when we left it on vacation(he was 22 months) but he hasn't missed it now that we don't have it and he actually sleeps heavier now. Also, it had a setting for outdoor noise which we used for his summer naps if the windows were open so normal outdoor noise or kids playing didn't wake him up!

Re: White noise machine
Ii use the vaccuum since they ae born, it still works...and sick as it seems the second irt turns off their eyes pop open. Or...get a cheap boombox and white noise CDs... brookstone makes a good one and if it doesn't work you can return it within 30 days i think. (Unless they changed their policy)

Re: White noise machine
I've never tried one with the kids (though I think I may when DD naps), but I used one when I sleep and it really helps me. I'm a super light sleeper. DD wakes up fairly easily and like you, I feel like I'm tiptoeing through the house and trying to get DS to stay quiet if he's up when she's napping has become a nightmare. In fact, maybe I'll try putting mine in her room when she naps today . I'll let you know how it works.

Re: White noise machine
We have one & we use it every night...although she also seems fine w/o it. We got one at BRU for about 20., it has about 8 different sounds

Re: White noise machine
I am a very light sleeper and cannot sleep without the white noise machine. Since DD is in the same room as me she has been around it since the end of the summer (once the a/c went off). I keep it near my side of the room though so it's not close to her. I have noticed it makes no difference to her if it is on or not so I'm hoping she has her Daddy's sleep habits and not mine. I would give it a shot, maybe just keep it at the opposite side of the room

Re: White noise machine
I use the humidifier as her white noise, not sure if that is okay to do, never asked

Re: White noise machine
We use one- it works wonders. I would think that if you keep the house super quiet so as to keep her from waking, you are teaching her to need total quiet to sleep. I find that it helps in that DD can generally sleep through most household noises now.

Re: White noise machine
We use white noise for DD. DH downloaded "hairdryer" sounds from somewhere and we play it through an iPod. So it didn't really cost us anything.

Re: White noise machine
We have a clock radio that is also a CD player and white noise machine (along with other sounds). We use it all the time. I believe it's by Timex - we recently saw it in Staple for $40-$45.

Re: White noise machine
I have one that is either from Brookstone or Sharper Image. It is a few years old now and it has several sounds and an alarm clock and radio. I got it before DH had his CPAP machine and his snoring was so terrible. I don't think that the baby sleeps any better or worse if he is in the room with it but I like it.

Re: White noise machine
We just ordered one. In the meantime, we turn the TV to a static channel and she usually naps in her infant carrier (she's 7 weeks).
