White or Wood cabinets
For those of you who were undecided HOW DID YOU DECIDE?? We will be redoing our kitchen soon and I can't decide. We have a cape and a galley kitchen so no open floor plan (it is eat kitchen in though). I don't want cherry, either walnut or white. Which is more timeless unlike the yellow kitchens of the 70's?

White or Wood cabinets
Since it's a galley kitchen, I would go with White. It will give the illusion that the kitchen is bigger.

Re: White or Wood cabinets
White!! I always wanted wood cabinets since I currently have a white kitchen. But as I look through listings for homes, I roll my eyes every time I see a kitchen with wooden cabinets and thinknto myself "gotta redo the kitchen...."

I'm completely opposite; I don't like white kitchens at all. I'd go wood.

White or Wood cabinets
I like white but I do think it's going to look dated once the white fad is over. Yes, it's classic but so are wood tones and they're "out" right now. We have the current trendy white/grey kitchen and I'm sure in 15ish years (maybe less) it's going to look very dated.

Wood is probably more timeless, but white is definitely the trend right now.

Re: White or Wood cabinets
Just get what you want.
Nothing lasts forever and in 15 or 20 years if it does look dated you can redo it if you're even in the same house.
Worst comes to worst you can always repaint them at that point.

Re: White or Wood cabinets
My personal taste is white But painted white - not the laminate white
My style is farmhouse/French country, so the painted white would be my choice
A lot of people keeping saying "white is a trend" my sil has had the exact kicthen I want for over 10 years now. I feel It's only a trend if you're choosing it because it's popular

This. I feel like wood is more timeless vs white which seems trendy right now.

Re: White or Wood cabinets
We went white recently. I have never liked brownish wood, felt it looked old and blah and dark and dated. I originally wanted off white but was afraid of it looking yellow so we took the plunge with white and I love it - SO bright and cheerful, makes the room look bigger and I get a ton of compliments on it.
White kitchens may be trendy now but not in that "new fad" kind of way - white kitchens have been around a looooonnnngggg time. Different strokes for different folks though - everyone has their own likes and dislikes. One of my relatives was horrified I didn't get standard brown wood cabinets (like hers). Hers were the reason I didn't, LOL!

I like dark woods so I wouldn't go the white route. However, I've seem some beautiful white cabinet kitchens but they just aren't for me, I just love the warm coziness of darker woods.

Re: White or Wood cabinets
It's simply preference. Neither white, or wood stained cabinets are "trendy" If you're concerned about a timeless look, I'd go with a simple design, and a more plain cabinet door - things like pulls, handles, even a backslpash or countertop are easIER changes down the road to basic cabinet style if you wanted an update in 10/20 years ........
Things like ornate hoods, mouldings, backsplash tiles, and cabinet colors (ex: gray, which is very 'in') are what make a kitchen look dated after awhile.
We are in the middle of a reno now, and I'm doing white shaker cabinets with a LITTLE bit of extra dimension in the moulding (b/c DH wanted it) I'm doing the whole 'joanna gaines vintage farmhouse' look .......but that's b/c I've loved it and wanted it since we bought the house 10 years ago......that has always been my personal preference. IT's your home. Go with what you love and don't let anyone talk you out of what you really like or want

Re: White or Wood cabinets
Both are timeless. The problem with wood is the color/stain of the wood is not always timeless.
I want a white kitchen. I am so over the dark kitchen look. I need lighter.

White or Wood cabinets
We decided on stained maple cabinets. I like white, but when I thought of how often they'd need to be cleaned (DS is not careful at all with dirt) I decided against it. My SIL got white painted and while they look nice, some of the paint is starting to peel (near the sink where it is always getting wet) and she is constantly cleaning.
What also helped in our decision is that our kitchen is open to the rest of the house and the white would look out of place based upon the color scheme and decor in the house.

My personal opinion is that white is "cheaper". I've built and bought a lot of wood for various projects, and to me, painted wood is typically lower quality, and the paint hides the imperfections. I realize that it's not always the case, but that's just my opinion.

Re: White or Wood cabinets
I would always go with painted white wood cabinets. I am not a fan of stained wood cabinets because the color of the stain that is trendy is always changing. I also think that white kitchens are more classic looking.

See, I disagree. A nicely stained wood is timeless. I don't find stains to be trendy in the least. I think more important with wood is the grain, something like an oak to me looks very dated and out of style. Less grain and a nice rich stain IMO always looks great.............and classic.
But again, these things are all personal taste.

Re: White or Wood cabinets
Thank you all for your opinions. Looks like it's split down the middle, just like I feel lol. I'm wrecking my brain looking at pictures of all different types. I like the look of wood, but agree, it has to be the perfect stain and design....many look outdated. I love white right now but am afraid they too will look outdated. Because of the galley kitchen I lean white because I feel it will make it look bigger but then I see wood and like them too.
Any pictures of your kitchens would be greatly appreciated

Re: White or Wood cabinets
I went with a cremey white, not a stark cold white. Absolutely love it. Dark cabinets don't work for some style kitchens. White opens the room up!
