Re: Who calls someones house at 9:40PM when they have small children

In my house (I have no children) I get annoyed if anyone calls after 10 and I probably wouldn't call anyone with kids after 9 but that's how I was raised. My best friend - who has 3 kids 5 yrs and under - STILL doesnt think twice about calling other people at 9, 10 or whenever. Except me, because she knows I'll flip.

I get annoyed if people call me after 9. I wouldn't call anyone with young kids after 8pm.

For having the DH who gets up at 4 am, which she knows about, having 2 kids under 5, which she knows about, and not liking phone calls after 9 unless it's an emergency, which she knows about I dont think I am overreacting. In my little slice of the world you don't call someones house after 9pm unless it's necessary.

I completely agree. My parents taught us not to call anyone after 9pm, regardless of their situation.

I think unless you specifically tell someone that you're ok with calls after a certain time, or they know that you're a night owl who likes talking on the phone late, that 9pm is the rudeness cutoff time.

We don't have any children and if we got a call that late, I would politely tell them not to call after 8pm again. A phone call past that point better be an emergency.

I dont like it when people call after 9:30 only because I want to relax and people usually dont. I would be annoyed too especially under your circumstances with your DH getting up super early and waking your son up.

If someone calls my house past 10pm, I get nervous. We rarely get phone calls to begin with. I talk to people I need to talk to either during the day, or on the way home from work. I definately think 10pm is the cut off time.

We don't like it when the phone rings after 9pm. We have a child and that is our only time to be together. We just don't answer. My gf shuts her phone off when she doesn't want to be bothered. I understand Karen, when you have a kid that is half a sleep on your lap and then the phone rings, your stuck and then get annoyed. BTDT!Chat Icon Just tell her not to call after 9pm or turn your phone off.

Re: Who calls someones house at 9:40PM when they have small children

8pm is my cut off to call or getting calls from anyone (except DH!!!!).

I don't want to disturb my friends during their dinner/TV/relaxing time. I have all day to catch up with them...if not by phone, then by email.

DH is getting calls sometimes late (past 10pm) but that's really rare.

I don't think 9:40pm is super early - 10pm is my cutoff for calling a friend now. 9pm is my cutoff for calling an acqutaince. 8pm is my cutoff for calling a pregnant friend who's husband has a toddler bedtime.

I would rather get phone calls when they're sleeping so I don't have the constant interruptions.

Ah the good old days in college where my friends & I used to call each other at 3am because we need to procrastinate studying.

I agree with everything...except the 3am studying part...3am calls were made after the barChat Icon

I don't think 9:40 is late. We get calls up until 11pm but Andrew doesn't wake up for anything.

I don't call people after 10pm. I only do if we know they don't care when we call them.

I don't mind calls on my cell phone up until 10pm - I'm not thrilled about it, but I can take it. Calling my HOUSE at 9:40pm would annoy me, yes. The phone rings in 3 places and it's loud. It's just so intrusive. For some reason I find if the call comes in on my cell it's less intrusive.

Re: Who calls someones house at 9:40PM when they have small children

Actually, I have a friend who has two small children who keeps her family on a late schedule. It would be rude of me to call her before 9:30pm and interrupt her time with her children.

It really has nothing to do with having children. You should express your preferences to your friends and turn your phone ringer off when you don't want the phone to disturb you.

I never call anyone after 10:00. Unless it is an emergency. When I was growing up, I couldn't get calls after 10, so I guess it just stuck with me. I also don't answer my phone after 9:30.

Re: Who calls someones house at 9:40PM when they have small children

We have the exact OPPOSITE problem. Why do people call so friggin early in the am? My friends with kids are all up so they think it is ok to call, well I wouldn't call them after 9pm, so why call me before 9am in the morning. They have all learned now that DH has as STRICT rule, no calls before 10am (I tried to make it 9, but he insisted on 10) unless it is an emergency. Most of our family & friends abide, but sometimes they forget and DH gets soo annoyed.

Oh and it doesn't matter that we wake most mornings by 8am, he likes the quiet time.

Re: Who calls someones house at 9:40PM when they have small children

I usually call my sister after 9pm. I used to call at 7ish, but she was always too busy and asked that I call later. She puts my nephew to sleep and can talk freely after 9pm. But my usual rule of thumb would be not to call after 10pm.

I try to be mindful of time, especially if they have kids. But I had this one friend that drove me nuts. I would call at 6 and she said she couldnt talk because she was preparing dinner. So I called a different night at 7. Her husband answers, tells me they are eating dinner and hangs up on me Chat Icon . Called another night at 8 and husband answers again and says she cant talk because she's bathing the baby and then puts her down. One more try!!! Called later that night at 9 and got my head chewed off for calling so late. Its been 4 months since I've called her. I figure when she has the time, she'll call me. Chat Icon
