We purchased in March of 08 - I guess that isn't recent, but our STAR just kicked in with the new tax year coming up.

Re: who has recently purchased a home and filed for STAR??
So you have until March to apply (check you county/town as some are June)
You will be filling for the 2011 Tax year.

Re: who has recently purchased a home and filed for STAR??
i did it years ago.. it was so simple. it was just a dumb 8.5 X 11.0 document ... i think you listed the purhcase date (maybe) street address with some sort of proof that the house is yours.
then weeks later they send you a letter stating that they are awarding you with the discount.
Isn't that right?

It asks for proof of residency, and that it is your primary residency (I think you don't get it if you are renting out the home).
I just filed today in Brookhaven and will be covered for the '10-11 tax year. We were covered for '09-10 by the previous owners.

Re: who has recently purchased a home and filed for STAR??
In Suffolk County the deadline to file an application is March 1. Any application you file this March 1 (2010) will be effective on your 2010/11 tax bill which is issued December 1, 2010. The tax year runs 12/1/10 - 11/30/11.
In Nassau County, the deadline is December 31, 2009. Again, any application you file by December 31, 2009 will be effective on your 2010/11 School tax bill. The school tax bills are issued October 1, 2010.
In Suffolk County, it's a simple form and they will ask you to provide either a utility bill in your name or a photocopy of your driver's license.
In Nassau County, you will need to provide them with a copy of your deed. A copy of the deed can be obtained in person at the Nassau County Clerk's office.

Wait! hold on! i am under the assumption that if i buy a house from someone that has the STAR discount, it doesn't get passed onto me??
ETA: i know i have to file my own, but just curious if they filed and got approved for 2009-2010, do i get the discount???

I applied the beginning of last year for this upcoming year and never got a letter!

Not every town issues a letter. You will see the STAR reflected in your assessment notice which in Suffolk County comes out in May.

Yes you do. Because the application is due so many months prior to the issuance of the tax bills, you will get the credit for the year but in order to keep it you have to file on your own.

You do not have to re-file every year. Once you have it, you're good to go.

Re: who has recently purchased a home and filed for STAR??
When I bought my house 6/2007 I was told by a county clerk that I had the previous owners star credited for that year. Well they were wrong. I just found out that no star was applied. I just filed and they told me it would be applied 10/10 I live in nassau

That's because even if you received the former owner's credit for the year in which you bought the house, you have to file your own application for the first applicable tax year that you own the property. You would have had to have filed your own STAR application no later than December 31, 2007.

How can you check if your STAR went through? We bought Dec 08 and filed before the deadline this year. Will we not hear until next year?

There is no "Assessor" in Suffolk County. Each township and/or village has their own. What township are you looking for?

Re: who has recently purchased a home and filed for STAR??
i actually placed a phone call to ORPS upstate. A sweet woman answered all of my questions. Basically, to close in january to 'keep' the homeowners STAR discount would be in my best interest. in the meantime, i will file my own STAR reduction for the following year.
there is no 'back-up' it's simply the assessor getting to your paperwork. if your assessor is good, it won't take long. if the assessor is not so good, it could take a year or more. (not verbatim from the lady on the phone, but this was the point she was getting at) BECAUSE it is the HOMEOWNERS responsibility to 'follow-up' on their discounts...
there you have it! call your assessor or go see them in person to make sure that you are getting your discount!!

I haven't seen a case yet where someone applied for the discount and the assessor didn't put it into effect. Mail everything to the assessor's office either certified mail or via fed ex so you get confirmation of delivery.
