My problem isn't with Palin reaching out to the 'average american' - although I think the whole soccer Mom and joe sixkpack thing is condecendign and ridiculous - my problem is w/ Palin portraying herself as 'average' ........telling us how she's just a reglular Hockey Mom taking care of her family ........ (well, that and the fact that I don't agree with her policies)
I wouldn't want the 'average' soccer Mom doing bypass surgery on my father
I wouldn't want the 'average' defense attorney when my life was at stake -
I wouldn't want the 'average' portfolio manager handling my money ..........
WHY the hell would I want someone average to run my country ?????????? And she IS average. She could very well be an extremely intelligent woman but, hey, so am I, and that doesn't qualify me to run a COUNTRY !!! 
She doesn't have a graduate degree, she doesn't have any military experience, she doesn't have any foreign policy expereince, she's not polished or poised, she can't speak well 'off the cuff' she's easily rattled and does not hide it well, and frankly she can be obnoxious - ........
Now, a STUPID person could not run a state, and I do not think she is a stupid woman - but really? She runs a state with a population of ..........Nassau County? And she may do a good job of it, but that does NOT qualify you to be the Vice President of a COUNTRY -

Stop speaking to the country as if you're speaking to your 17 year old kid -

Ugh... it made me crazy when she did the "shout out" to the class. I am actually embarassed that this is the woman, out of all the women in the United States, who was chosen to potentially be the first female VP. I even went into the debate with an open mind, wanting to see her redeem herself. Ultimately, she was not as bad as I thought she would be, but I found her incredibly irritating, condescending and wanted to smack that smirk off her face the entire time.

well according to facebook, one of my law school classmates is now "joe 24-pack" 
i think it was the daily show, but after the republican convention they sent someone down to interview people and someone commented they liked palin and thought she was a good choice because she shows the country that "anyone can be VP"

I have to say that I went into watching the debate with an open mind last nigh. I really wanted to hear what they both had to say. I ended up wanting to throw the remote thru the TV. I kept saying, are you running for VP or Gov again?

Oh, I know that she is not the first VP Presidential candidate. I guess I didn't express my thought clearly. I know that Geraldine Ferraro was the first ever candidate, but she did not make it into office. Sarah Palin now has the potential to be the first female VP. Weren't there better choices out there somewhere????

Of course there are, but they probably weren't young enough, pretty enough, or conservative enough to serve McCain well. Or they are attached to the Bush administration (Condi, though I would prefer her over Palin 1000 times) and he probably wanted to steer clear of that whole crew. I agree though, it's a diservice to our gender to have this woman as a potential VP.
But to answer the post, I think she's way too folksy for my taste. I cracked up when she said "Say it ain't so Joe..." Joe Six Pack is not flattering at all IMO--I picture a duffy guy chugging down beer every night in front of bad TV. Do I want this person as a leader in my country? No.

Great post! Someone posted a few days ago (I wish I could remember!) that one of George W Bush's greatest accomplishments was in lowering people's expectations.
Because she didnt appear as awful as she did in the Couric interview does not mean that she won the debate - I dont see how anyone can say that Biden lost that debate - you can WISH that he lost - you can not agree with his positions - but in terms of answering the questions clearly and using facts to refute the opponent - the winner was clear.

MarisaK- I loved your post and I totally agree.
Ironic how she mentioned her son in Iraq and her son with special needs when trying to remind us how she's "just like us" but neglected to add "my knocked up teenaged daughter."
I was not impressed with her- she tried to make it sound like she was doing something impressive when she told Biden and Ifill that she would not answer the questions the way one is supposed to in a debate. It was a clear cop out and I think if a male candidate had done that, the media would have torn him to shreds. I really though she came off as too rehearsed.
I also think the "Joe Sixpack" thing is consdesending to middle and working class people. Those of us in that category do not define ourselves as being all about drinking beer.
Besides, I married Bob Tequila.

I couldn't get past the $100,000 house reference and spent much of the debate searching mlsli for houses up to $100,000. I think there were less than 10 -- all in bad areas and all ready for immediate teardown.
She thinks she's "in touch" but she has no idea.

You're right the winner in terms of answering the questions and using facts to refute the opponent was crystal clear. That, for some odd reason , is not the standard by which the press is measuring Palin. It seems to be all about how she held her own and wasn't embarrassed.

Ok so I am NOT crazy! I THOUGHT I heard this.
Again, I am considering throwing myself into the race. I see no other viable alternatives and though I secretly rally for Nader for the sole purpose of pizzing off my card carrying Republican DH, I don't think it will happen.
BUT I am a non-drinker and I prefer hockey over soccer. Can we picture Abby in a goalie mask? This has BAD photoshop ALL over it.
