Re: Who says you can't go home? MLSLI does. (VERY long)

I know the feeling, when my mother & stepfather divorced after 25 years of marriage my family house was sold. It was heartbreaking but it inspired me to make my home the place where family memories are made. It took me years to own a home large enough to accomodate our entire family, but we did it.
when My beloved Grandma passed away almost 10 years ago we cleaned out her house & sold it. She & my grandfather would have had tons in common with your parents. They earned everything they had & created a beautiful family. My Grandmother was my hero & her house was like a sanctuary to me, almost like a house of worship. It was so special to me I think it was more upsetting than the sale of the house I was raised in. I used to drive by sometimes to see how 'the new people' were doing. They changed things so quickly, it was sad. I know for sure that house is filled with so much good karma & love, I'm sure they feel blessed to live there even if they don't know why.
I'm sure the family that buys your parents home will have those feelings too!

I can relate leslie, my parents house, the home I grew up in just sold...they are moving out the beginning of the new year...DH, DD and I are going up to NY for her baptism in Dec and its the last time I will ever be, eat, sleep, enjoy that house. I know when I see everything in boxes I will probably lose it.

As someone who still has a mom but is saying good bye to her childhood home for last time tomorrow, I can't even begin to imagine the loss you are feeling. I am so sad to leave my parent's home for the last time and I, THANK GOD, still have my parents to hug.

Thank you for making me feel so grateful once againChat Icon

I'm sorry sweetie. I can only imagine how difficult it was for you. I've been there and it sucks. Luckily Abby will have the beautiful memories of her grandparents from you and your brother/sisters. That is the exact way that I felt about my beloved Grandma and her house...it was sacred ground!

I know what you mean about not wanting to drive down the street again. I even have difficulty driving past the homes of childhood friends whose parents have either moved away or are deceased. Just so you know, we do appreciate the history of our house. We bought from an older couple who raised their family here since the early 1960s.

I guess that somewhere in that house is the place where the dog put the stain on the wall. Chat Icon .

Nah, it was painted over years ago. Though the bleach stain I made on the carpet is still there.

I do not think I could devote enough time to a blog the way I would want to or I would. My moments are sporadic at best. One minute I am serious. The next I am posting pictures of my daughter in a hockey goalie mask:

I am truly all over the place.

I've been there, it's awful. Cleaning out their things, remembering all the memories you had there, it's really tough. Chat Icon Chat Icon

We had a tag/estate sale the week before Abby was born. I couldn't bring myself to go. As it stands, we still have Mom's dining room set which is in great condition and worth a lot of money. None of the 4 of us can take it and nobody will give us what its worth. What it is worth to me is more than money.

Storage for a set that big would cost us hundreds a month or we would have done it. Ed and I wont have a house for close to 2 years.

Re: Who says you can't go home? MLSLI does. (VERY long)

I know all too well how difficult it is to say goodbye to the childhood house you grew up in. My parents decided to move OOT in the spring of 07 & I cried the first day I came over & saw the "For Sale" sign! I knew that my kids would never have the memories of the house & I could never show them "this is where mommy grew up!"

They fortunately sold the house rather quickly & the moving day was difficult for me. I stood in my old bedroom crying my eyes out but then I realized that the family that bought it would now have the same opportunities I did.

I remember meeting them & telling them I hoped this house brought them the happiness & memories we had in the 27 years we were there...To this day, I have drove past it & it looks the same but I can say it is weird to see other cars in the driveway

I know exactly how you feel. My great aunt passed away in May and the house that she owned for 58 years (Orig. owner) was just sold last month. It was horrible to see the house empty and everything being sold or thrown away.
Unfortunately I have to see other people live there b/c the house is 2 houses away from my grandmothers.
I cried when I saw the for sale sign, I cried walking through each room seeing it empty.

Its very sad when a house you have for so long is no longer in the family.
