If I host, I pay -
It's kind of an unspoken rule that you OFFER to help the host, and the host refuses your money Chat Icon

See, I guess I don't look at it as "hosting". It's really not that formal. We're usually hanging out together and it just happens to be at my house. We split the bill. Just as when we hang out at their houses and get take out we split the bill. And the text would usually go like "hey what are you guys up to? Want to maybe come have a game night tonight and we can just order pizza?" And if we received that same invite we would assume we were splitting the cost of the food. And we'd probably bring beer/wine too since it's their house.

Exactly we thought of it as we are just using my house to all hang out. Plus we have people over almost every weekend. If I was expected to "host" we'd be broke.

Yes, I see it this way, as well. We have friends with a bigger place and the host the most, but everybody contributes (with a pot luck, or shipping in for a take out, wine and dessert, etc, so it's even) - Except if it is a birthday celebration or something specific, that we know is not only a get together.

Re: who should have paid?

I really think this depends on the scenario. If you invited them for dinner, then I say you pay. If it was very informal, they happen to be there and it happens to be meal time, then I'd not feel as funny splitting it.

BUT it really depends on who it is too. . . I wouldn't take a friend's money but maybe if it was close family and it was a really spur of the moment unplanned thing.

I would have been more annoyed at the lack of offering to pay and the lack of anyone offering to pick it up with DH though. You should at least offer to pay, even if you have no intention of it!

Re: who should have paid?

If I had invited people to my house my expectation is that I am paying. However even if I am invited to someone else's house for take out I always offer to pay my share or half and if they are cooking I offer to bring a dish or will bring wine or dessert even if they say to bring nothing. But that's just me.

Like some others say... depends on the scenario.

Getting together with girlfriends we split

Hanging out with another family or couple and decide we should go to the closest home and order take out then we split

Inviting friends over for dinner we pay, but 99.9% of the time they will bring something like wine or dessert.

We were walking around with friends and the kids on Halloween. We live around the corner from each other and happened to be closer to their home when it started raining. We ran to their home and of course split the bill plus DH went with the other DH to pick up the food.

when our friends/family hang out, we always split the bill. As a 'host' I would only expect to pay for everyone else if i had invited them over for a party or specific event.
But for a random Sat night game/movie night? We all split and no one has any issue with it.
I don't order something of my own choosing and tell people what they owe - everyone looks at the menus we have available and picks what they want.

If i went to a friends house and they insisted on paying for my take out, i'd feel really uncomfortable and like i owe them something..

I guess I'm in the minority, but whether we go to someone's house and order out or they come to our place and we order out, in general we usually split the bill.

Same.
