Whole foods - eliminating plastic bags
I don't know if this was posted before, but I just saw this about Whole Foods eliminating plastic bags by Earth Day 2008. They will give you recycled paper bags, if you ask.
Apologies if its a repost...

Re: Whole foods - eliminating plastic bags
I saw this on the news last night. The problem with this they are saying is that it takes more energy to make the paper bags...I never know whats the answer
We use cloth bags

I especially like that they're encouraging the reuse of old plastic and paper bags - you don't have to buy a new "trendy" canvas tote to help - using anything you already have multiple times helps a HUGE ammount! This is something we can all do by simply keeping a few grocery bags (plastic, paper or canvas) in our cars and remembering to grab them on our way to the store.

What about the produce bags, though? Will they still have those? A & P near me has paper bags near the potatoes , but plastic other places & I don't remember seeing that in Whole Foods, but I don't usually buy potatoes there.
We do bring our own bags, but I like the Whole Foods paper bags, for putting out my paper recycling.

Re: Whole foods - eliminating plastic bags
Thanks for sharing that. I do shop there but haven't been in a while.
I always found it odd that they mostly used these thick heavy plastic bags. ANd the cashiers pack only a few items in each bag (when they pack, I usually try to do ALL my packing). I always found the cashiers to be very wasteful when packing (probably some people in there complain about heavy bags, or crushed items so they are trying to be nice).
So I am very glad to hear this. They usually have nice thick paper bags with handles or they sell really nice canvas bags that I bought from them that are really large and cute, and sturdy. So I am happy they are doing this.
