Why are prices different at different Target stores?

I have noticed this all along, but never questioned it until today.

I bought Dryel yesterday at the Target in Setauket. When I got home, I realized that I needed the starter kit, not the refills. so I went to the Target in Medford and it was $1 less for the same exact item Chat Icon Chat Icon I also noticed that the cereal I bought yesterday is $.50 cheaper in Medford.

I asked the woman at customer service and she said that she didn't know.

I used to work at a Target upstate and it was the same deal up there - prices are cut differently for different products at each store depending on the market for that store - they learn what sells better in other areas, and what doesn't and they discount according to that.

At least that is what manager explained to me when I asked.

I've noticed the same thing, specifically with the Setauket store. I wonder if it is because that's a more affluent area than some of the other Targets? Chat Icon Setauket is definitely more pricey than the Bay Shore, Central Islip, or Medford stores. Can you tell I go to Target a lot? Chat Icon

I noticed it too. Especially when I used to buy formula for my DD. It wasn't always the same price in every store, even for their OWN brand Chat Icon

That's part of it. In the Rochester area, there are 5 Targets, and the ones in the more afluent areas would only discount down 30% or less, whereas other stores would discount down 50% or more.

At the Setauket store, I bought a swarvoksi sweater a few years ago. It was regularly priced at $75. I went to the Medford since we were down there visiting family and I saw the same sweater on clearance for $10.94. Needless to say, I bought the cheaper sweater.

Re: Why are prices different at different Target stores?

I'm assuming that it has to do with overhead. The rent in Setauket is probably greater than that in Medford or someplace upstate.

I noticed this with Dunkin Donuts too. The same coffee can be 10-15 cents more from one place to the next.

I noticed this a few yrs ago.
I bought a shirt at one location and it was too large. I went to exchange it at another location for the next size down. The 2nd location had the shirt priced for more money and they wanted me PAY the difference!Chat Icon

I didn't pay the differnece and left with the right size shirtChat Icon

That's interesting! There is really only one Target near me, but it is right by apartment buildings that Donald Trump owns, so I wonder if we are one of the higher priced stores? Chat Icon

Re: Why are prices different at different Target stores?

Yup...HUGE difference! My DH takes the train through Brooklyn and ALWAYS shops at the Target there. Diapers are soooo much cheaper. If you need outdoor stuff and they are sold out at all the LI Target stores, the Brooklyn one has it...and soooo much cheaper (we bought our outdoor solar lights from there). Got our son the Pat Pat Rocket there...sold out in LI and cheaper there. I think it's based on the economic status of the area. It's not fair.

The higher priced ones are usually only 5 to 15 cents more expensive per item (from my experience)...But that could add up if you should there a lot! I've gotten a ton of clearance items at the Setauket store for 75% off, so they do the discounts to clear out...I heard the % off markdowns are at the discretion of each store manager. That's why Setauket is 90% off Xmas stuff today, while Islip is still only 75%.

Yeah, not worth driving over the Tapanzee & paying the toll to go to the Nyack store!

Chat Icon Target is a bargain as it is. The difference in the Dryel price mentioned in the OP could add up, if you bought a lot Dryel or if was simliar for other products.

I have no idea what the Christmas discount is at the White Plains store right now. Perhaps I will go see tomorrow.

That makes sense. More apartments, fewer yards in Brooklyn!

just wanted to clarify something... each Dunkin Donut store is a franchise that is privately owned, Target is a chain owned by 1 coporation.
