Why?? Black Friday shopping vent!
I went to Kohls at 3am this morning and was SHOCKED to see little kids there. The youngest I saw was about 2 years old. Of course he was having a fit. There were at least 20 kids there under the age of 10. How can you drag out your kid to a store at that time of the day? It isn't going to end well because the store was pretty crowded and the kids were melting down all over the place. Is it necessary to bring the whole family shopping? And then the best thing I saw was a Mom yelling at her 5 or 6 year old because he wouldn't stay in one spot so she could buy his presents!!! She kept telling him to stay near the clothes rack next to the toy aisles so she could shop!!! I really wanted to smack her!! Keep the kids at home when you go shopping that early....

I could see going with a newborn who was up in the middle of the night anyway, but not an older kid. that is just cruel. But omg, I can't believe Kohls was open at 3 am this morning?!!

I know, I saw that too! I saw a person sitting with maybe a 1yr old in a car at 11pm while their spouse waited out TRU. Seriously, go home! People shouldn't be dragging their baby/toddlers out at some insane time so they can shop

We were online at target for 4 hours at 330 I saw a mom with an infant in a car seat. I was cold and raining and the store didn't even open for another 1/2 hour.

I went to TRU last night at 10 and saw people bringing little kids with them...some as little as 2 and older kids. The best was the line was a mile long, hundreds of people and it was cold and raining. Needless to say after sitting in my car for 45 min. I decided to go home

Re: Why?? Black Friday shopping vent!
the whole concept of black friday shopping is out of hand. People get trampled, workers dont have holidays anymore b/c stores are open 24hrs (like walmart), or open smack in the middle of the day (like mIchaels)..really...sometimes I think we need to take a step back.
Those poor kids. If you dont have anyone to watch them or stay at your house, then dont go shopping.

Seriously?! It's not worth whatever the savings might be or not getting that one item that I wish I could have gotten. Life is just too short to care about this crap....if I couldn't get it on-line, then no-one is getting that gift. .....at least, not from me.

Re: Why?? Black Friday shopping vent!
Never in a million years would I even consider bringing a child to the store at that hour! They should be in bed sleeping and dreaming about Santa!
It's so sad what has happened to the holidays, it really is. Where is the common sense?

Re: Why?? Black Friday shopping vent!
I don't know, maybe I am in the minority, but I wouldn't care really.... seems like a bit judgmental to me in a little way.
I mean, it doesn't happen every single weekend..its once a year.
I'm sure many who people saw out today were parents that never did it before......maybe today was the first time, maybe they thought it would be fun and learned a lesson.....
..maybe some parents pumped their kids up with the idea of it being cool to "go shopping early" when it's still dark out - and maybe even made an event out of it.
Maybe they went to breakfast at the 24 hour diner after, or something. Or rewarded the good kid shoppers with a treat to a matinee after, who knows.
I don't know. It's not something I have done yet, or could have done today even if I wanted too.......but it wouldn't have bugged me to see kids out. I wouldn't have given it a second thought, honestly.
Is it sad what has happened to the holidays? I don't know....but what were the holidays ever meant to be? I know growing up, the first thing I looked forward to was the toy catalogs...and circling stuff. I still loved and appreciated family, I turned out okay....in fact, I know I am a lot less materialistic than most I know.
It's once a year, thank god.
and some people say the savings aren't worth it...well, maybe not to you it's not, but some are sadly still pinching pennies in today's economy.

Re: Why?? Black Friday shopping vent!
Then I guess i would be one of those moms that you hated. This year i didn't bring my kids out with me.
But in the past when I just had 1 DD. I have brought her out at midnight to the outlets and at 4 am to the mall. I bring a stroller, let her sleep in it and she slept through most of it. In fact me and my best friend used to do it every year until they got about 5-6 and knew that we were buying stuff for them. The girls loved it, every store we went into they got a free stuffed animal or something. They thought it was the greatest thing in the world. Now that my DD is almost 9 she was sooo upset that i didnt take her with me since she has such fond memories of it. Maybe it's a girl thing, and she loves to shop, but i dont see it as being a bad thing if you have well behaved children, which i do.
Also at the time i was a single mom and had no option on leaving my DD home with someone, so she was already used to being everywhere with me and sleeping in the stroller. I still brought the big stroller when she was 6 so she could sleep and rest and be happy, and by about 6-7 am when the girls were awake the stroller now held my packages and she walked next to me and we had an awesome time.

Re: Why?? Black Friday shopping vent!
I could really use a good deal on gifts this year, but DH worked today and there was no way I was getting DS up in the middle of the night to take him shopping. Besides waking him for no good reason (and the loud noises etc at the store would keep him up even if he did want to go back to sleep), I am too nervous about the crowds getting too crazy at that hour.
I would have taken him shopping later in the day, but he now has a cold and I felt bad taking him out in this weather with a cold.
To each his own, but at this point in my and DS's life, it's not worth it to take him out shopping in the middle of the night.

I don't recall saying I hated anyone...But IMO to risk something happening to my DC by bringing them out to an overcrowded store ant 3-4am isn't worth it. Look at the adult that was killed in Walmart. There was an incident at a Target this year. Some people don't care who they push out of their way to get what they want. I just don't see the joy in yanking my child out of bed in the middle of the night to shop. Even at a young age....DS is only 1 and would have no interest in being in a stroller in the middle of the night with a crowd of pushy people around him...I got pushed around this afternoon at another store and the person is d@mn lucky DS wasn't with me....What you do with your DC is your thing. I don't care. I was just expressing my feelings!

Re: Why?? Black Friday shopping vent!
My only concern would be the overcrowding & pushing - and for me the point of going is to get deals on things for the holidays that I don't want them seeing until Santa has unloaded the sled.
While I'm a bedtime nazi, I don't fault someone else bringing their kid out. I don't know that the mom didn't adjust bedtime & naps the day before or if an infant normally wakes at 4-5am either.
If someone is willing to navigate a crowd with a stroller & deal with a tired kid the next day, that's their call.

To each his own. Like I said, my DD loves shopping and is well behaved so it never was an issue with her screaming in the store. And she loved her stroller and would sleep in it, so it wasn't a big deal. Kohls by me at 3 am was not crowded at all this year. Toys r us at 10pm was a different story, but they had it well under control. i would never wait on a line in which they didnt have good crowd control and order .
I'm in the minority here, but that's ok. because i know that i can take my children- all 3 of them into any store at any time of the day and don't have to worry about the hysterics, because they do sit in strollers and are well-behaved.

Re: Why?? Black Friday shopping vent!
If someone wants/needs to bring their child black friday shopping then that is their business. Not mine. I won't judge them, I won't come on this board to vent about them (because there obviously are people on here who do take their kids) nor will I ever say NEVER because ya just never know if one year you will need to bring them out.
People need to stop worrying about others so much.

See, I semi agree with you bc I hear more judgement about this based on the time which I say "to each their own" BUT "I" am really against the safety part. People are NUTZZZ. They run into these stores trample and kill others. Thats just crazy. these type of cases prove to me why a 2ft child shouldnt be running in a store with mom/dad.

Re: Why?? Black Friday shopping vent!
I would be more concerned for the safety of the child. Hell, I got ran down twice by this crazy old lady in Kohls, and that was at 9am. People are nuts out there and have no regard for the safety of others. I can't imagine putting a child through that.
And, my boys would be complete nightmares - so I would never ever do it in a zillion years.

Just curious...did you do something to make them like this? Or do you think its their personality? Age? Just curious because my 16 month old DD is a nightmare shopping, she hates the stroller.

Since when is it a bad thing to feel sorry for the kids whose parents dragged them out in the middle of the night to save a few bucks?
I think common sense is sorely lacking sometimes. Has nothing to do with worrying about what the parents are doing. I know I would feel awful seeing those kids out at 3am having a meltdown knowing that they would probably be so much safer and happier in their own beds.

I agree about the safety part. For one day, I actually wouldn't feel terrible about messing with the kids' sleep. They'll get back on track. But I would really worry about the kids getting trampled/hit at these crazy sales. Nobody "needs" to be out at 3 AM at a Black Friday sale... they choose to.
