Why do people argue over others doing someting nice?
I am collecting gifts for our Salvation Army Angel drive in my office. The 2 children we picked asked for barely any toys; they asked for basic necessities such as coat, PJs and socks.
Of course we have to have someone who didn't participate (which is FINE as it is not mandatory) BUT had to make snide, nasty comments on those of us who did and that "the kids are on Welfare anyway" and proceeded to argue about participating. I told him it was voluntary and no one is making anyone who isn't participating feel bad, but where do you get off debating it? It is a NICE gesture and these kids are going to have a lovely Christmas due to the generosity of others.
Why is being nice, charitable and generous to others a friggin crime????

Yeah, like he really knows the facts behind their situation. I hope HE never is in a position to have to rely on any kind of "system", let alone the thoughtfulness of others.

I am so disappointed in people in general these days!!!
Thank goodness there are people like you doing nice things.
Bah humbug to your co-worker.....his comments are meant to alleviate his own guilt for not participating

Misery loves company, and this sourpuss was just trying to bring someone down with them.
On the flipside...hooray for the folks participating in this! Gonna make some kids really happy!

UGH. So sad. It's not an innocent CHILDS problem that their family needs assistance.
And god help this person should he ever fall on hard times and not know where to turn. Some people honestly thrive on misery. You have to completely tune them out and smile and know YOU and your wonderful other coworkers are making others christmas a bit brighter.

OMG, how could someone say "well they are on welfare anyway"?????? These are children who you are trying to help to have a nice Christmas, it's not mandatory to help but nobody asked for the commentary.
It is very sad that these persons do know know the true meaning of Christmas. It would be great if they were visited by three ghosts on Christmas Eve.

Re: Why do people argue over others doing someting nice?
Who cares if they are on welfare??? Does this jerk have any idea what the going rate for a family of three is in Suffolk County? For the record it is $957. If he thinks that family can afford housing in Suffolk County and Christmas gifts he is OUT OF HIS MIND.

I wouldn't even engage in that type of conversation. I'd just ignore them and walk away. There's nothing anyone can say that would make that person see things differently.

I had a letter once where a little boy was asking for a coat and a night light because his little sister was afraid of the dark.

I think it's a great idea to have done what you did- those kids are going to have one heck of a Christmas when they get a nice WARM winter coat and nice clothes to wear!
