Why do you think NYPD makes less than White Plains, Long Island etc?
I don't understand why they make a lot less than other police departments. It's so unfair. DH is with White Plains and the starting salary was and currently is WAY more than NYPD. You don't need college - with NYPD you do. He gets uniform allowance - NYPD has to pay for their own (I believe). He's been at top pay since last year and this is his 4th year. I'm not sure how long it takes to be at top pay for NYPD.
I just can't understand the difference in pay between them and NYPD and other police departments. It's RIDICULOUS and completely unfair!

dont knwo why either but i agree its totally unfair. And a lot of times NYPD has to deal with a lot more $hit depending on where they work. Sad

IMO, NYPD is grossly underpaid.
It's one of the reasons why I didn't follow through with joining NYPD. Why would I sign on with them when I can go to somewhere else like MD State Troopers or one of their sheriffs departments, make more money and get a take home car that can be used for personal use.
Plus I feel NYPD is abused by the people/communities of NYC, the politicians and bureaucrats.

I always wondered that too. DH used to be NYPD and now has since transfered to LI .
For what he was doing in NYPD (along with everyone else) I think they deserve a H E L L of a lot more than what LI cops make.

I know... DH left NYPD to join a PD in upstate NY. Top pay is more than NYPD, his commute is 10 minutes, and he has a great schedule!
He gets extra $$$$ because he has a 4 year degree and is bilingual, too!
It is so sad though because he LOVED the job and his co-workers at NYPD (& says he will never ever find friends like that) but for him, the cons just outweighed that!

Just guessing, but they have over 30,000 officers and NYC property taxes are substantially less than out here, so I guess there just isn't a large enough pool of money to pay them more plus supply all the gear they need to do their job - the patrol cars, gas, maintenance, utility bills for all the precincts, the list goes on and on.

Yeah, this is why. People don't want to pay.
If people paid more in property taxes - like we do out here - the officers would be able to get paid better.

My DH gets extra $$ for working midnights, he gets extra $$$ for being bilingual, they get holiday checks.

bigger police force.
more to pay with less funds.
people in suburban mostly affluent areas pay more taxes.
people in NYC would flip if their taxes were $7000 a year. not only that, they couldn't afford it.
on the flip side. a lot of places with a higher paid police force have volunteer fire depts.

I agree, but I think it's simply a budget thing. smaller areas tend to have a larger salary budget and less officers to divide it up.

They dont supply the gear. the officers have to pay for it.
They could pay them more. The city has the $$, but they wont do it.

i dont mean to start a riot here but i think that is an unfair statement to make that people in queens cant afford taxes. Some people might like living in queens. In some places near me in douglaston, bayside, little neck the houses are multi million dollar houses and the taxes are not that far behind that of a smaller house on LI. my landlord pays almost 6000 in taxes for 2 family in douglaston and my friend pays 5000 for a 1/3 of an acre in suffolk.

I think also b/c the Mayor ***** and always cries poverty. A couple of months ago he said the city had a surplus, and now that it is coming time for the NYPD to settle their contract all of a sudden they are in deficit
