Why is Cystic Fibrosis testing done?
They took a bunch of blood tests after my first doctor appt and I now find that I am a carrier for CF. They are testing my husband next to see if he is a carrier. Why do they do this? Does anything happen differently during pregnancy or at birth if the baby can potentially have CF?

Yes if you are both carriers your baby can have CF. this happened to my stepbrother, his wife is a carrier he is not, both children they have are carriers so they have to be careful when they marry and make sure their significant other is not a carrier or thier children will get it.
Dont worry, what are the odds you both are. Best of luck to you

What I am asking is why do we need to know now? Does it really make a difference to know now?

I really dont know the details about CF during pg, I just know about it after but I am sure if they are testing for it now, maybe there is something that can be done. I would ask next time you see the dr. or do what I do but becareful not to get too emotional or involved in every detail but I go to emedicine and look up everything.

Thanks!!! I was a bit scared at first, but I'm doing okay now. I haven't seen anything as to why it needs to be known.

Re: Why is Cystic Fibrosis testing done?
I'm thinking it's the same reason they test for anything else - just so you know and then can better prepare yourself for having a child with it (or whatever other people decide to do).
I have friends who both did not know they were carriers for CF and now their 2 children have it. It seems to be manageable disease for them so far (kids are 5 and 3).

Re: Why is Cystic Fibrosis testing done?
It is very important to be prepared for CF if your child is testing postiive for it.
The child is ok if only one person is a carrier for it. There are mild cases and bad cases of it. But if you know in advance, you can begin research and prepare for it....

I think the reason to know about any of these issues, is to have a specialist in the delivery room.

Re: Why is Cystic Fibrosis testing done?
I went through the same exact thing a few weeks ago. It was very stressful. I tested positive for carrying one gene, and thankfully my husband was negative. But I know what you are going through. Have him go right away, so that you can get the results. Remember, he would have to tes positive for the same exact mutation that you have. I know its easier said than done, but try not to worry about it
