Why Is Everyone Leaving LI & Moving To NC?
Curious, why i hear so many people moving from long island to north carolina....is there something i don't know. fill me in people!!
(well other than prob lower housing costs. ) there has to be other reasons why so many long islanders are flocking there.

cheaper housing, lower taxes...the list goes on and on..we did it b/c we didn't want to be married lviing in my parents basement
WE have a house here that we would never be able to afford in NY...i do miss LI..everything i've ever known is there...family and friends.

we moved to improve on our family life. Long work hours, commuting...now I am a SAHM, DH's days off are our "Family Fun Days."
We will purchase a home, but nothing big. We moved here to buy a home for under 200K. No matter our income or what is out there, we just want a reasonable mortgage.
DH is really very "outdoorsy"
This fits him well. Affordable sporting events, tons of parks...
(in all fairness, I moved from Staten Island)

The reason for NC specifically is its a big banking town so lots of simlar jobs. My sister moved there she is an Accountant. She actually makes more down there than up here by quite a bit. Oh and her house was in the $100K range!

It's cheaper so you have the option to be a SAHM if you want to.
I don't quite agree with the commute though. So parts are just as bad as driving within LI.

I think you're speaking of Charlotte. Which is why my husband and I also moved down here (Charlotte). I'm a CPA, who worked on financial services companies, came down here to do the same thing, not spend three hours commuting, and not be killing myself to pay the mortgage. The weather is also better (not too hot, but very rare to get snow). We moved down here a little over two years ago, and I refuse to ever move back.

Ditto. My cousin just moved to Charlotte (he's in construction) and it's MUCH cheaper. He is selling his house in Northern VA and could buy 2 houses for the price in Charlotte.
My best friend is in insurance and is considering Charlotte. I think it depends on the industry you're in but with Charlotte growing so fast they will eventually need workers for all industries.

Plus now with the new taxes if you buy a house in FL now your taxes are just as high as if you lived on LI.

NC just got ranked the best ot live in the US for several reason. More jobs, younger communities/families, best place to meet people as well Even though I live in GA. we are considering NC one day in the far future. You still have the ocean which is great.

But for now at least, it's still very affordable. A $400K house here is very different from a $400K house in LI, and you dont need to spend anywhere near that much for a beautiful home here.

Yeah...we bought our house in NC for less than $300,000...and I *never* imagined our first home would look like this one! 
It's inevitable that the taxes will go up, but it doesn't matter...the fact still remains, you have to be able to AFFORD a house to live in before you even have to worry about the taxes! For us, there was just no way we were buying here on LI. I look at the houses here, and think to myself...why bother?

There are brand new 4 - 5 bedroom homes in Charlotte for well under $250K - the price of a shack in NYC/LI.

if you go on the nc county schools websites, they have the salaries published. FH looked in a few counties, he has 4 years exp and a masters, and it was in the low 30s.

We can't wait to get down there and stop renting up here. Everything is more affordable there and you don't have the rat race. Our quality of lives will be better and we are looking forward to raising our child down there.

i think tht even though the pay is a lot less it doesn't equal out. i think it's b/c housing cost in ny (li) is so high that you can make a lot, a lot, a lot less down there to afford the same or better things.

you are making less and saving less even though you a spending less, I know some people that moved and had a hard time with saving less. And what happens if you don't like it? Is it easy to return to NY after you sell your less expensive house in NC?

I hear about everyone leaving and it makes me wonder too. But when I really think about it, I just cant leave ny and go to some place like nc where I don't know anyone and don't have even one family member there.
I would rather live in a one bedroom apartment with my son, daughter, and husband then have a grandious house in nc. What good is having a house and have no one to show it off too?? I own a house now and it's not big at all, it's very basic 3 bedrooms, liv, din, kit but I love having people come over and entertaining and seeing family and friends. I could just imagine what I be doing in nc....trying to make friends and never having anyone come into my house to "see it" if you will for years. My kids will bring home their friends before I could.
I don't know if anyone else feels like this. But I do. Perhaps oneday when my in-laws kick off I could consider moving (we have a very small family) but for right now, I live in a little house in long island that i can barely afford but by God's grace we do every month.

We will be moving to NC next year. We are currrently building our dream house and I can't wait to move there.
The reason we choose to sell our beautiful home here in LI and move to NC is because we are looking for a more slow paced environment meaning away from hustle and bustle here in NY.
