But is it true that even though the houses are cheaper, the pay is also lower which in some way equals out.
Just curious I would never leave LI but this comment is always made to us.
i think tht even though the pay is a lot less it doesn't equal out. i think it's b/c housing cost in ny (li) is so high that you can make a lot, a lot, a lot less down there to afford the same or better things. you are making less and saving less even though you a spending less, I know some people that moved and had a hard time with saving less. And what happens if you don't like it? Is it easy to return to NY after you sell your less expensive house in NC?
that is true. i have know people who moved to other places (mostly virginia) who are doing so well for themselves. They make more in virgina then in NY. that's when I usually think about moving. but i don't work, my husband does and I think his salary in NY is still considered fairly high. i doubt we can get more somewhere else...

I hear about everyone leaving and it makes me wonder too. But when I really think about it, I just cant leave ny and go to some place like nc where I don't know anyone and don't have even one family member there.
I would rather live in a one bedroom apartment with my son, daughter, and husband then have a grandious house in nc. What good is having a house and have no one to show it off too?? I own a house now and it's not big at all, it's very basic 3 bedrooms, liv, din, kit but I love having people come over and entertaining and seeing family and friends. I could just imagine what I be doing in nc....trying to make friends and never having anyone come into my house to "see it" if you will for years. My kids will bring home their friends before I could.
exactly how i feel!!!!

I have to say it....people ALWAYS jump to this anytime there is a NC post. The same family and friends are more important then a big house.
Not all of us move due to the big house. I don't even have a house. Its not about that. Its about 30 minute commutes. Its about the change of pace. Less aggravation. More time with family. It takes a different type person to be able to pack up their life and say, okay, time to go where we know no one because life is too short to work it away. That's why we moved. We will never have a grand old house. I never want to clean a grand old house. DH's dream is a bungalow. That's it. I could have bought in NY, leaving us house poor. I don't need the stress.

me too... I couldn't just pack up and leave my friends and family... I know I will never be able to afford the kind of house we could probably get in NC or GA but I think I would be very lonely if we moved.

Re: Why Is Everyone Leaving LI & Moving To NC?
Everyone is different, everyone is looking for something else in life. For me and FH, we would have the same amount of $$ left at the end of the month - in NC we would have a new house with NO family around, or on LI we would have a 40 year old house, a little smaller, but we see our family all the time.
I hate when these posts come up, because the grass isnt always greener on the other side - just because some people are moving doesnt mean its right for others. If you feel someplace else is right for you - move. but some people make it sound like LI is the dirtiest, most horrid place to live, when in fact if housing was cheaper, im sure alot more people would stay.

I agree with you- but not everyone has family left here- I am last one in my family living in NY- my inlaws, Dad, Bro and Sister have already left- and my grandma spend 6 months out of the year in FL
so I am in the opposite situation- I am moving from NY too- not to N.C. - but down South
we just want to live a different lifestyle and be with in driving distance to most of our families - and luckily my DH can do what he does from Mexico if he wanted- all he needs is phone line and a fax
even if I buy a house here- no one will see it- b/c my Dad refuses to come back here

I feel that NC is going to be like FL though. Everyone flocked down there because it was cheap and now everything has gone up because of that.
Plus now with the new taxes if you buy a house in FL now your taxes are just as high as if you lived on LI.
Yes. I "met" a woman on another message board I have gone on for years and she said her taxes were high mostly because of hurricane insurance.

most counties in south florida have 2% of your purchase price as your taxes
so a $500K house is $10K in taxes
they are trying to get rid of that law now

That's crazy. I don't know how much she paid for her house but I know she was paying alot in taxes.

This is NOT TRUE. I know MANY people that have gone to other states and make MORE than they would on LI. LI has a real crisis on its hands because all the expenses have gotten out of control here. Many young people are moving. I used to work in employee training and motivation and the #1 biggest issue CEO's have here is finding good talent.
The only positions where the pay would be better here are Police and teachers. Other than that, a corporate job can be found making just as much if not more than on LI. Now if you are an investment banker in NYC you will probably not be able to beat that but for mid level jobs I don't think there is much of a difference. Check out teh career board the admin assistant job-you'll see what I mean. They want a college grad for 28K a year. They should be ashamed of themselves!

There is a website that tells you can compare the cost of living to see how much you can afford to lose (money wise). I personally think the only way to move out of state in a lower col area is to make as much as you do here in NY or more so you can live comfortably. Why would I want to go someplace else and live the same way I am here?

Many people I know feel this way. But I can tell you that, right now, DH and I are living in a 1 bedroom apartment that's getting too small just for the two of us. I could NEVER raise a child here...not only is it cramped, but I feel it would be unfair to him or her.
For us, it wouldn't make sense NOT to go. We'll be living in a beautiful house, many of our family members are moving with us, and in the end, we don't want to have to choose between paying our mortgage and putting food on the table.
A good friend of mine just bought her first house in Bellmore. Fixer-upper. Her mortgage is $3100 and thanks to that, her and her husband have decided not to have children. If that's not "settling", I don't know what is.
The bottom line is, moving off LI is just the right thing for some people...as it is for us. I can't stand when people tell us we are "selling out" or "fleeing". It's about LIVING...we only get one shot!

That situation happened to a co-worker of mine. She moved this year and now she is trying to come back this summer. Her kids hated it and the schools were no where near what they are here.

Re: Why Is Everyone Leaving LI & Moving To NC?
Having lived in NC and on LI, yes the cost of living is definitively lower in NC but you also pay for what you get.
You can afford a house on one income. And no, you don't need to make $100K or above to make it on one income.
But this is not NY or near NYC. This is the "country".
You have to choose what is good for you and your lifestyle.
I showed DH housing costs in the Charlotte area. He almost fell off his chair.
You cannot compare both.

I lived in a crappy area of queens in a sorta 2 bedroom (connected room) with one kid for just over 3 years in mice infested, roach infested apartment to save for my home. I think it is about sacrafice. I did my time.
As far as your friend, it is sad. But I personally think that you should have a plan in mind. Mine is my husband works, i care for the kids. And back-up is me working or my husband working a second job. I would be scared if we were tight paying our mortage and we were at our fullest money earning potential (if you will).
I think it depends on what is important to you. You don't need to have a great house or even one in a very desirable neighborhood like bellmore. You can move further out, house in okay neighborhood, etc.
I would have not been too proud to live in my parent's basement or smething like that to save. But unfortunately, I was never offered that.

Re: Why Is Everyone Leaving LI & Moving To NC?
We moved to Charlotte NC in Aug 2006. We have no one down here now but moved because of DH's job. (we are originally from Bklyn). He and his partner/best friend and his wife moved with us. She hated it and they packed up and sold their house after living here for 8 mo. and moved back to NY.
DH loves it here... I hate it!!! I would move back to NY in a heartbeat...but then I think of my daughter and future children and wonder if it is worth moving back to NY to rent and apt. We are currently house hunting and it's the ONLY reason why I am staying here. ALOT OF HOUSE FOR PRACTICALLY NOTHING. I am still unsure if I will really make it here ... DH it so nervous that i will change my mind at any point. He has slowly convinced me.. but deep down it's lonely. He doesn't want to ever return to NY.... but here...It's just not home.
