Why is my nearly 3yr old waking up in the middle of the night???

My poor hubby is dying here. She wakes up and asks for daddy. If I go over she gets upset and wakes up even more while telling me to "GO AWAY" and starts to cry "NOOOOO Daddy's turn"

Well Daddy is getting less and less good sleep. She wakes up around 3am then again some nights. Last night she was up three times.

Her sleep schedule hasn't changed. Asleep by 9:30 up by 7am. Anyone have this happen?

She could be having bad dreams. 3 year olds have insane imaginations.

I asked her this morning.

She was just her goofy self.

Ugh.. poor hubby.

She told me "Daddy sleeps there" and pointed to the other pillow. I said "no Daddy sleeps with mama in mama's bed" and she says "ok" but you can tell she doesn't care. She just wants daddy with her. In a way, I think this is a battle he has to fight but I wish I could help him. She wants NOTHING to do with me until morning time.

Abby and AJ are only a couple of weeks apart. It is rather age appropriate for them to be waking up. The neurons in the brain are still firing and making connections (or so says the behavioral psychologist I asked about this - LOL). There are ways to discourage it and bring it to an end, but in some cases (I think Abby's), it is a form of talking/walking in one's sleep and I was asked if either DH or I do this. DH has been talking in his sleep for ages. they do grow out of waking up though - some take more time than others.

Chat Icon He knows it too. Says he'll even make up stuff like "Im off to have sex with the nieghbor" and I'll just agree and go back to sleep haha!

so she gets it from me!Chat Icon

Please tell me they grow out of it soon enough or at least that she won't need Daddy in there to go back to sleep.

DS is the same age and has been doing this too for the last month, about the same time, once or twice a night. He comes to the door, which is closed, asks tO open the door and then wants to be ticked back in. I thougt it might the urge to to go to the bathroom, but the times I've Mae him go, he doesn't want to go back to sleep! I'm hoping this stops soon!

What are the ways to discourage this behavior?

Yep. I have been a sleep walker/talker for years.

DS wakes up at night for sometimes HOURS at the time. He has very vivid dreams and I think he wakes up from them.

This is an ONGOING issue for us. Like I only slept 3 hours on Sunday night.

He has periods when he does it. Sometimes more than others.

Really? That's so interesting. DS wakes up all the time and DH is the worse with sleep. He sleepwalks and talks in his sleep. What would I google to find out more about this? I would love to send DH a link so I can blame out kids' sleep issues on him!Chat Icon

Please note that I did not run to a private therapist to seek this answer, rather I spoke with a clinician in my work place - I teach special ed in a psychiatric day treatment center and have psychologists (clinical/behavioral/school), psychiatrists and social workers at my fingertips. I ask about all sorts of stuff. The one Ispoke with on this issue said that it happens between the ages of 2 and 5 and usually ends on its own. Abby has had one full blown horrific night terror in which she was not reachable at all. In the other cases, she wakes up, calls for me and lately, has been falling back asleep. Other times, she cries and we get her and bring her in with us. If I didnt have to get up at 5 am, Id coax her back to sleep in her own bed, but I'll be damned if I am going to negotiate with a 2.5 year old with an hour left on my time clock. We plan on working on this over the summer when I'll be home with her - that and potty training.

Yeah.. we coslept originally and right now I would LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE for her to come back into bed with us instead of refusing to leave her room.

Listen up all those nay sayers.. Co sleeping does not necessarily mean co-dependency haha AJ won't come to our bed for ANY reason! She wants/demands HER room!

but Hubby is dying. Just like you said. With an hour or two left on the alarm clock he's not in the mood to fight the good fight.

I feel guilty cause even if I try to help she throws me out and cries (which wakes her up more and makes it all harder) so i stay in bed. Nice comfy bed, while he sleeps on a floor Chat Icon

I truly hope this passes soon.
