Re: Why is Swine Flu such a big deal? Q & A link
I have to be honest- this link is put out by a media outlet. And it's the media who is blowing this thing up. For true information that's not sensationalized- go to the CDC website.
This bug is controlled using Tamiflu and Relenza. The people who died in Mexico didn't have access to either one. Also, lets be honest, Mexico is NOT known for it's state of the art healthcare system.
At this stage of the game- professionals and the public are briefed and aware so treatment is practically immediate for anyone who gets sick- which apparently is why no one has gotten a serious case here in the US.
OF COURSE this is something to watch and be cautious about, but I really think it's going too far with the media and causing what appears to be hysteria.

This is a link direct from the CDC -- I honestly would not trust any other sites but one direct from them
CDC Swine Flu site
any sites from any type of media outlets are going to be geared to instill more fear than info, cause that gets more clicks and sells more papers.

Can anyone take Tamiflu and/or relenza? What about young children and/or pregnant woman?

Children over the age of one and pregnant women in extreme circumstances. Animal tests showed reduced toxicity to the fetus.

I thought only children over 5 can take it.

I've been on this all weekend because I work at the school in Queens and am pregnant. The Dept. of Health and CDC have stated that pregnant women can take the antiviral drugs to combat swine flu because the risk of not taking them is higher than the risk of taking them. There are no extensive studies to prove that there are any harmful affects.

I'm curious to see how controlled Tamiflu and Relenza will be. Will it be something that is given out easily by doctors? If I have a bad cold and a fever will the doctor give me these drugs? That worries me. Illnesses mutate and to be honest that scares me. It has also been reported in Australia, and nothing ever comes here. Australia is so strict with its quarantine that it makes me wonder.
Am I really worried? No, but I am concerned.

How can a country quarantine people who appear healthy? People are carriers for a day or so before they show symptoms. That's a big cause of how it's transmitted.

I mean the quarantine and everything in general is so strict, not that they quarantine people. When you get to the airport everything is xrayed and if you have been to certain countries you have to mark that on your form when you come in. Also people here longer than a tourist visa need a chest xray. All I am saying is things are quite strict here, more than most other countries. I am a bit surprised that anything actually got here at all.
